"When your enemies are credibly accusing each other of genocide do not interrupt them." -Sun Tzu

That said, whenever the US starts beating the human rights drum, usually something bad is down the pipeline.

I don't think this is really part of any sort of bigger plan. I think it's one of those dumb impulsive things Biden has a habit of doing.

Trying to do Regime Change in Turkey would be slightly more idiotic than trying to do it in N.Korea, atm.

Erodgan sucks, but his base remains fiercely loyal. He's not a guy you can just make go away. He's also sitting at the crossroads of the Euro-asian continent, single-handedly backstopping a flood of war and climate refugees into hyper-xenophobic proto-fascist Eastern Europe. Kicking him over would send dominoes flying across three continents. It would be the beginning of decades of chaos and bloodshed, easily rivaling the mess we created in Iraq.

But after our efforts in Libya, Syria, Egypt, and Yemen, I'm honestly not clear if this would be a bug or a feature in the eyes of Pentagon leadership.

By the way, Armenians were probably the most affected but not the only victims of genocide. Assyrians and Pontic Greeks were also murdered or mass deported at around the same time. My great grandparents were pontics from Trabzon and came to Greece as refugees, so I always felt some kind of weird lingering feeling of nostalgia or bitterness in the family about this. It sucks that this stuff still damages the relation between our countries to this day but I understand it to some extent.

Ironically the nationalists here treated Pontic refugees horribly, to the extent that "pontios" became slang for "idiot", and yet it's still the nationalists who pretend to care so much, as is typical.

So why do Turkish nationalists get so mad about the Armenian genocide being recognized? I'm not very well read on this issue, but wasn't this over a century ago and done by the no longer existing Ottoman Empire? Is it like one of those culture war things for them?

It’s a culture war thing for sure, but they also all do the Nazi thing where they’re like “It didn’t happen, but it should have!” If you push them even slightly.

I believe it undermines Ataturk’s conception of everyone inside Turkey being Turkish. I suspect Turkish elites are kind of wary of acknowledging the existence of minorities since at least half the fucking Ottoman Empire was pried out of their hands by emphasizing ethnic differences (and the rest of Turkey in Anatolia was nearly colonized as well). A kind of odd religious Turkish friend talked with me about this once and explained her view (not mine) that the Armenians were traitors who were working with the Russians and therefore asking for it even though no genocide actually took place? Others who know better than me please correct me if I’m mistaken.

I visited Turkey and found it pretty amazing. It’s such a fascinating place. There’s so many civilizations that have come and gone there. The Turks themselves are relatively recent arrivals but they’re in this odd situation where the most incredible building in their biggest city is a Byzantine church. My friend tried to square this circle by describing herself as Anatolian rather than Turkish, which is probably true, but it kind of reminds me of Elizabeth Warren ranting like a lunatic about her ancestor’s high cheekbones.

So why do Turkish nationalists get so mad about the Armenian genocide being recognized?

Why do Americans get pissy when you try to take down Confederate General statues or talk about Native American genocide?

wasn’t this over a century ago and done by the no longer existing Ottoman Empire? Is it like one of those culture war things for them?

A century ago, but still fresh in the minds of folks with a nationalist mentality. It's not as though the Turks have done a particularly good job of integrating their various ethnic sects since WW1.

Accused? But the US did commit genocide.

Correct, but it's not a very compelling argument against recognizing a genocide that your country did.

I would strongly encourage some countries to start recognizing indigenous genocide in the USA, though. The libs would lose their shit.

        this also works:

[country] recognizes the ongoing genocide of African Americans being carried out by militarized police forces occupying their neighborhoods.

Agreed, that that would be hilarious.

I’d also love to see individual states accuse each other of genocide too: New York issuing an official recognition of the Missouri genocide, etc.

This is true, but they also get really mad when another country points it out. Look at any Reddit thread that implies America is bad.
