I hadn't watched it since like 2013 and decided to give it a go to catch up. Every other joke is reddit tier epic bacon or "women belong in the kitchen" shit. I'm cringing at my 14 year old self for finding this funny
I haven't watched it in a while, but I have very fond memories of it, and still quote aspects of it.
well the first few episodes aren't particularly stellar. i liked it from namek to semi-perfect cell. after that it's weirdly serious in tone and it's barely a parody anymore.
Same here, I used to love that show. Thank god we grow up, ay?
Well, some people do lol
The saiyan saga is alot like that and the first couple episodes of the frieza saga are like that, but I'd say the majority of dbza holds up pretty well. They got better at actually telling jokes. The android/cell saga is great work and honestly I don't even really remember dbz all the great dbza is my official head cannon. They just wrote it better. Not surprising either they were more passionate about it than the writer was.
Agreed. It took me about the first season or so to find it consistently funny, but I am so glad I did. They aged, production wise, writing wise, comedically, matured as people, became better VAs, etc. It can't be viewed as a single product, even with the same people the whole time a project like that might as well have different people by the end just due to how much people change and how much of a passion project it was
I want to say it improves dramatically over the course of its run, as the creators went from edgy teen/early 20s amateurs to adults with years of professional experience writing and editing, but it's been years since I've seen it.
I remember thinking similarly of the very early episodes of Yugioh Abridged/The Nostalgia Critic when I rewatched them, but they got better as it went along and I think DBZA could be the same.
Alot of internet entertainers at the time overly-relied on meme references (Which obviously age very poorly most of the time) for their humor, but as time goes on and they get more experience, they usually improve and learn not to rely on them as much at least.
Its funny because I just watched hellsing ultimate abridged with creator commentary and even the creators admit that their early work was absolute cringe dogshit that makes them leave the room when they hear it.
Extra funny because they went from epicbacon edgelords to Twitter woke radlibs.
Old comedy series ages poorly due to overuse of edge and current year humor. Current year comedy series projected to not repeat centuries old pattern.
