Not just if it's too low, the number will go down pretty much just because someone checked. My credit score is pretty good and it still dropped when I applied for a mortgage.

If you're looking for a place to rent in, say, a dense urban area with high demand for housing and limited supply, and you apply for multiple apartments, every single one of those landlords will run a credit check on you and your score gets dinged for each one, just for looking for a place to live. And there's no guarantee any of them accept you.
