Used to be the same in Wales until recently, only time I was ever glad that I'm crap at picking up blokes was when I discovered it would interfere with my ability to give blood.

Not in my experience, though i remember people getting screened out for "if you've ever had sex with a man who's had sex with another man" so women dating bi dudes were also excluded

Also, idk if you got a answer to this, but do you know about trans men in MLM relationships?

I saw an email between a trans man who had sex with men before transitioning and red cross who said they couldn't donate blood because they're male.

Edit: here's an article based on a different experience, cw for transphobia

No idea, this was in Florida in the late 00s I think the Red Cross was still pretending trans people didn't exist. Tbh I think the responsible thing to do with those questions is lie and save people's lives with your queer blood

I imagine that not a lot of people have donated this year or last year 'cause of covid. but also I wonder how much more they could get if they didn't have such anti queer rules on blood donation, from a younger generation that is increasingly queer

Obviously the market has decided that the most efficient allocation of recources happens when those surgeries are postponed. This is the best possible world, rejoice!

I feel like there's some big fucking consent issues here considering that that blood is going into another person's fucking body!

If the alternative is blood not going into another person's body, I think it's worth considering. The "gay blood is poison" rule is being phased out, here's a statement from the red cross

The American Red Cross believes blood donation eligibility should not be determined by methods that are based upon sexual orientation. We are committed to working with partners toward achieving this goal.

It used to be no gay sex for 9 months (maybe 6? I dont remember) but they've reduced it to 3 months because it's completely arbitrary, and they perform tests either way. If you've been having lots of anonymous sex or have contracted AIDS, then don't donate, but I don't think sharing a night with your long time partner should prevent you from saving a life

One of my well-meaning but ditzy lib friends is still pretty sure that MLM are still more likely to contract AIDS. I feel like that's not correct but I don't know enough about medicine to dispute it. I'm assuming there have been new discoveries and developments since the 80's, does anyone have further reading?

epithelial tissue is very thin, but at least the vagina has evolved adaptations to getting micro-abrasions during sex

Oh interesting! So there could be a greater risk of MLM contracting AIDS?
