Article is paywalled but the opening paragraph is good enough, the auction for the leases begins at at the end of the year

The Trump administration plans to approve an oil leasing program for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Monday, opening up the pristine 19-million-acre wilderness to drilling for the first time and making it difficult to unwind the decision should Democrats recapture the White House in November.

The sheer inertia of capitalism and its love of entrenched energy interests will kill us all, in the most boring way possible.

Can't wait to be in the path of a fire hurricane, and still listening to people argue over what should be done with the remaining two coal miners.

They don't care about the miners, just about the mining companies.

We cannot afford billionaires. How does one do this without an internal moral compass spinning out of control? "Specifically tailored to minimize impact"? How about you just don't impact it?

Thank God the strong moral principals and undaunted leadership of the Democrats will oppose this... ⌚👀... Any day now

What do we even need the drilling for at this point? I feel like Trump isn't even good as an administer of capital.

      The Guardian article mentions:

It is unclear if oil companies will be interested in drilling in the area any time soon, because oil is cheap and abundant elsewhere.

Five of the largest US banks have said they will not finance ANWR projects.

Yeah but what if they want it later. You don't know how hard it is to have far more wealth and power than you could possibly need in the here and now. Really you have no choice but to also foreclose on the possible of anything ever being good for anyone else in the future.

I love how the article says that it's difficult for the democrats to reverse the decision even though it's not going to lead to anybody drilling. Democrats are literally too cowardly to tell a bunch of people that aren't drilling somewhere that they cannot drill somewhere anymore.

yeah I think even some socialists fall into the trap that is believing that rich people must be clever in some way to stay rich - in reality many projects rich people start are dumb and fail but they still make more money than they spend from investments

what I am saying is that it is highly likely that Trump isn't a good administer of capital.

Fucking fuck trump, I hope he dies before they do that shit.

    The Guardian's take mentions:

The porcupine caribou herd is critically important to the indigenous Gwich’in people, many of whom make their homes on or near its migration route.

Didn't Obama open the arctic to drilling twice as president?

Ohh yes he did, but don't worry guys scientific american is here to tell you why its ok:

I wonder if they have the same take on trump doing it. :thinking face:

it could be but it won't because of the power of capital. the energy-based rich bastards are the most powerful rich bastards there are, and no legislation to curtail the power they already have will get through anywhere.

Because the people who would undo it are Democrats.
