You can ask any Cuban if they think China has been a driving force for Communism or if they'd rather just have the USSR back.

more like state capitalism in one country at the expense of communism in another but I digress

why dismiss chinese overtures in cuba like this?

When fucking Spain nearly overtakes China as your second largest trading partner, China is, at best, a neutral connection. China doesn't give a fuck about ideology, and because China sees little use for Cuba, economically speaking, to even suggest China is some great friend to Cuba is fanciful crap. Cuba might as well be Java to China.

Spain (and the former Soviet Union for that matter) are literally multiple continents closer to Cuba than China is. Does China use the Suez and Panama canals to trade with Cuba or does China-Cuba trade have to route around the whole Eurasian supercontinent and/or around South America?

91% of all DPRK trade is with China. To me it looks like Cuba-China shipping routes would be the longest in the world, especially if shipments can't go through Panama or Suez without seizure.

Yeah, I'm sure there's more. China just isn't going to do much for Cuba in so far as the military for obvious reasons.

China is literally the furthest country away from Cuba in terms of sea and air lanes. Cuba-bound shipments would have to go through the Suez and Panama canals. Those would be incredibly long supply lines (if not the longest) especially without canal access. Very bad for a military alliance.

Choke points on every direction, West (Suez, South Africa-Antarctica), East (Panama, South America-Antarctica), and even North (Canada, Eastern United States, AMERICOM).
