Several of you have also asked where we draw the line on hate. We don’t allow titles on Netflix that are designed to incite hate or violence, and we don’t believe The Closer crosses that line.

Cis people do not get to decide where that fucking line is.

I recognize, however, that distinguishing between commentary and harm is hard, especially with stand-up comedy which exists to push boundaries. Some people find the art of stand-up to be mean spirited but our members enjoy it, and it’s an important part of our content offering.

“You’re all too sensitive to take a joke.”

Holy shit what a disaster of a PR statement. If I wasn’t stealing netflix already I would cancel.

Chappelle bragged about being "cancelled" because of some negative tweets he got and people saying they're done with him. Its like motherfucker, you gained fans from this and said an opinion that over 100 million Americans agree with or at least DGAF.

I still think the only person to ever get "cancelled" is Colin Kaepernick. Dave will be fine and still adored as a comedian.

The Dixie Chicks were not much spoken of in the 2000s after Natalie Maines spoke out about Bush. They managed a comeback years later but were kinda out during some of their prime years.

Bill Maher was literally canceled but then ended up on HBO so that's a wash.

The Dixie Chicks were at the height of their careers and one of the top acts in the world. Overnight, you’d be hard pressed to find a single radio station that would play them. Their comeback during the Trump years was basically riding the culture war for a comeback, but the original cancellation was legit a massive push from those in power to silence them

I had no idea who they were prior to the Bush thing. I'm also in Canada where we got to spend the Iraq war feeling really superior to Americans, so I think they actually got more airplay here afterwards.

There was a sweet middle-ground during which just subscribing to Netflix was easier than figuring out the hip new way to download a chunk of media.

But there are so many god damn services now. And lots of them still try to inject ads into the stream. Nobody is going to pony up $10/mo for every damned channel (and $50/mo if you want sports). It's dumb. I'm just going to steal it now.

Netflix then suspended Field along with two other employees for trying to attend a director-level meeting they weren’t invited to.

Everyone on reddit is screaming about how the article is so misleading and she was fired for trying to attend a meeting she wasn't a part of.

Like yeah you fucking dipshit I'm sure that it's totally normal for companies to respond to trying to attend a meeting you're not in by firing you on the spot and totally not about anything else.

If there's a silver lining, it's that since Netflix fires aggressively (they will fire you after a year if you meet expectations, as it means you're not a "superstar" employee) there is always a glut of companies waiting to hire anyone who worked there.

Full internal Netflix memo that was leaked. It’s fucking trash.

    Directors/Estaff:

I wanted to follow up on The Closer - Dave Chappelle’s latest special - as several of you have reached out following QBR asking what to say to your teams. It never feels good when people are hurting, especially our colleagues, so I wanted to give you some additional context. You should also be aware that some talent may join third parties in asking us to remove the show in the coming days, which we are not going to do.

Chappelle is one of the most popular stand-up comedians today, and we have a long standing deal with him. His last special, Sticks & Stones, also controversial, is our most watched, stickiest, and most award winning stand-up special to date. As with our other talent, we work hard to support their creative freedom - even though this means there will always be content on Netflix some people believe is harmful, like Cuties, 365 Days, 13 Reasons Why, or My Unorthodox Life.

Several of you have also asked where we draw the line on hate. We don’t allow titles on Netflix that are designed to incite hate or violence, and we don’t believe The Closer crosses that line. I recognize, however, that distinguishing between commentary and harm is hard, especially with stand-up comedy which exists to push boundaries. Some people find the art of stand-up to be mean-spirited but our members enjoy it, and it’s an important part of our content offering.

In terms of our commitment to inclusion, we’re working hard to ensure more people see their lives reflected on screen and that under-represented communities are not defined by the single story. So we’re proud of titles like Sex Education, Young Royals, Control Z and Disclosure. Externally, particularly in stand-up comedy, artistic freedom is obviously a very different standard of speech than we allow internally as the goals are different: entertaining people versus maintaining a respectful, productive workplace.

Today’s conversation on Entertain the World was timely. These are hard and uncomfortable issues. We all bring different values and perspectives so thank you for being part of the conversation as it’s important we’re clear about our operating principles.

    -Ted

He noted the cancellation of Harry Potter author JK Rowling as one particular injustice.

Ah, yes. The woman with the multi-billion dollar media empire built on the back of a children's book she cribbed from an assortment of other authors. The woman who can get booked on any major network news outlet for an interview by whispering "New Harry Potter book" into the right ear. The chronically online Twitter poster who will not stop retconning her novels a decade after they've hit the second hand market.

Love how this is Chappelle's idea of "Someone who got Cancelled".

I wish someone would cancel Dave Chappelle's ass. :gui:
