More than a little (CW: racist jackass)

I feel like I should note that this obviously pro Israel rag included this collage in their article about him, as though this is normal and cool actually

youd be surprised how much people will kick someone out of a circle in competitive if people found out they did something terrible. TO's generally dont like dealing with this shit and will just ban a player if necessary to make people feel more welcomed in, at least at a locals standpoint.

definitely better than my experiences with like tcg tournaments for example. (hell one of my local TCG stores outright banned an entire tcg from being played due to rampant theft and bad attitudes)

Oh yeah, I'm just surprised, Smash bros has a reputation for people trying to ban other players for having girlfriends (because it gives them an "unfair advantage") or sending CW:SA

          spoiler

Death and rape threats to female players for beating them, not idle stuff either, fucked up shit like saying they'll be waiting for them outside after the tournament.

and of course the classic "players will avoid showering for months before a tournament so their stench distracts their opponent."

quite the opposite experience ive had in tournaments ive attended. it's of the few geeky events where ive seen people WITH their SO often. FGCs in general also tend to be the most trans friendly group relative to other hobbyist stuff. The biggest reason why it's reletively speaking more friendly because its hard to shit talk people when most of the event is done solely in person, so you get less of an online persona to start namecalling with anonymity immunity. At least, pre online matchmaking age.

I am talking about stuff that mainly happened a decade ago I believe, so it would make sense that local tournaments would fight hard against that kind of reputation. Competitive games thrive on having a large playerbase, not a small roster of half a dozen insufferable assholes who have chased everyone else away.

Smash is surprising. More traditional fighting games have pretty big POC followings

Nice. I admit I don't know much about the fighting community or even the Smash community other than there being a misogyny problem

There is a huge misogyny problem or really cluster of problems, but most FG communities (Smash included) are very multiracial. There's also obviously a bit of an orientalism issue towards East Asia (varying types based on the country), but overwhelmingly the biggest issue is getting the community away from weird channer types like you see on r / kappa who are terminally pornbrained and think that a female character wearing a skintight one-piece is the woke mob assailing their combat bikinis.

Even if you take this at face value, it really is something to call a ban from being able to play a video game for 5th graders competitively as harassment. The moment you graduate from high school you should probably be banned from competitively hitting Starfox with Kirby.

Why don’t they test their antisemitism theory by having a non Jewish Zionist become a top player and see if they get banned

    Condemned for his beliefs :(

Oh you mean his belief that both genocide and settler-colonialism are cool?
