just take Leningrad immediately but also "zurge rush" (lmao) Stalingrad at the same time. Like yeah okay I'm sure the Nazis (famous for Blitzkrieg not close combat) can handle two of the most intense urban warfare battles at once hundreds of kilometers apart without getting their ass owned.

taking Stalingrad wouldn't even cut off the oil either the Soviets had made preparations to ship Caucasian oil across the Caspian Sea to Astrakhan to keep the military fueled. It would have been awfully inefficient logistically but they would have been able to do it.

The Soviets weren't going to let them have the Caucasus oil either. There were comprehensive plans to destroy the oil infrastructure if that area was ever lost.

definitely! Our armchair general up there probably doesn't know that the reason the Nazis didn't "zurge rush" Stalingrad was because they were busy with most of their forces trying to rush the Caucasus oil fields before the Soviets sabotaged them! Stalingrad was a secondary objective until Hitler became desperate for a major symbolic victory that year after the Nazis stalled in the Caucasus mountains.

Know what I'm doing today, and it's watching more Soviet Storm, the Russian eastern front documentary. Really cuts through the BS the west thinks happened there, and guess what? It isn't just slavs fucking around in front of glorious aryans, it's a functional and capable military machine that ends up heroically destroying fascism almost single handedly

If only the German army didn't act at all like the German army.

It's fucking ridiculous that they'll do all sorts of work to pretend that Germany was so close to victory. Like no. They were arrogant and obsessed with aesthetics. They went into Russia with pretty jackets and got wrecked. They couldn't manage supply chains and got wrecked. They couldn't strategize in battle and got wrecked.

They epitomized the dead-end that is fascism and people will still crawl out of the woodworks to defend them.

One small detail where I think this is reflected is in the squad doctrine: pretty much the entire rifle swuad was just there to protect and supply the machine gun, this slick high tech device that will easily mow down the mindless slavic zerg rush. The fact that they usually just got outflanked and killed would appear to refute this view.

This is actually the least ridiculous part because Eastern European fascists constantly go for this reasoning lmao. :wonder-who-thats-for:

    focus on RAF facilities

    1. britain had radar before the nazis
    2. the raf turned every flat bit of ground into an airstrip
    3. easier to bomb a city than a random field in the middle of nowhere
    4. those airstrips had aa guns and, you know, fighters in them

Is there any actually good alt-history? I enjoy the genre sometimes because of just how insane and ridiculous it is, but is there any piece of media that managed to use alternate history in a way that isn't completely fucking dumb?

The Temeraire novels are literally "what if the Napoleonic wars had dragons." I haven't read it in years so I'm sure there's some shit liberal takes in it (you follow an English sea captain as the main character), but it was fun alt history.

That's especially funny because Germany tried to take Leningrad immediately and failed with appaling casualties, that's why they decided to siege. And Germany tried to zerg rush Stalingrad, but also failed, because supply routes were complete shit and they literally couldn't bring enough men to replace their losses, even forgetting about things like "getting enough artillery shells there to not get wrecked by Soviet artillery" and "bringing your soldiers winter clothes so they don't freeze to death as soon as temperature falls below zero".

Plus, German training regarding fighting in dense urban areas ranged from horrific to nearly non-existant. The German army was never designed nor trained to fight in cities, which is why they would consistently get their shit absolutely rocked whenever they fought the Soviets inside cities after Barbarossa.

There was also a question of armaments: German infantry squad had a machinegun as its primary weapon, while soldiers with carbines were to support it. It allowed them great effectiveness in open areas, but they weren't of much use in cities. Soviet infantry squad was planned to be rearmed with automatic/semiautomatic rifles like SVT/AVT/AVS or SMGs like PPD or PPSh (plus PPS later in war), and they were much better in close combat while underperforming in open areaa. Rearmament was completed only partially, and later Red Army focused on SMGs, even creating dedicated "automatic weapons companies/battalions", plus providing additional SMGs for soldiers going into urban battles.

Also Red Army divisions had more mortars then German and that also contributed to their relative effectiveness in urban battles.

I didn't even know the germans did much urban warfare outside of Stalingrad and Berlin tbh (on the eastern front, I know in the west they had a punchup with us Americans and the brits a few times in towns and cities)

How Germany could actually have won WW2: do a successful communist revolution after WW1, ally with the USSR, build nukes before the US does it

It's not possible for fascists to win a world war, they all are strategic geniuses like the dork in OP's post. When you build an entire ideology on bullshitting yourself, it's inevitable to end up like that, fascism purposefully and by design wrecks your ability to think critically by turning its followers into the affectively volatile manchildren it needs to come to power in the first place and coming up with takes like "just be faster and win the battles where you got your ass handed to you" is perfect evidence of the galaxy brain takes that leads to. All ya fascists bound to lose.

Not that "successful communist revolution in Germany after WW1" is something remotely possible when you start your masturbatory alternate history thought experiment at that point in time. You'd have to rewrite the entire organizational history of the German working class from the ground up for that to be a thing that's viable and at that point, it becomes unlikely that WW1 happens the way it did, which could in turn lead to the October Revolution lacking its material foundation. These things require so much stuff to be different that the entire timeline you're dealing with most likely becomes totally unrecognizable and unpredictable. But at least i'm aware of that instead of coming up with takes like "Munich Soviet Republic should have lasted instead of being crushed" or "zurge rush Battle of the Ruhr with troops you've pulled out of your ass".

Alt-history writing-wise I could kinda see having things be more or less the same up to the various German revolutionaries being able to (for the sake of fiction, not any single act) fight at the same time. But that sure as hell wouldn't get a communist Germany, it would likely mean the German army going hard against them, or crumbling still but the Allies moving right in to attack the Soviets from Bavaria all the way to Vladivostok. All this shit would change the treaties with the Baltics, etc.
