I went to the hair care section yesterday at a big grocery store looking for conditioner and the only options available for men were 3 in 1s (body wash, shampoo and conditioner in one! The very concept exudes mediocrity)

I just don’t want to smell like tropical fruit is that too much to ask

Why would anyone want a conditioner that can't also act as a shampoo/body wash/deodorant/lubricant/rust preventive/antibiotic?

I don't find the regular conditioners to be too aggressively scented. your pantenes and what have you.

If your hair smells like fruit for more than 5 minutes out of the shower I would love to know your secret. Just get whatever one makes your hair feel nice.

Just buy V05. I have curly hair and do the full curly girl routine. V05 is less than $1 a bottle, and has been better than any other shampoo or conditioner I've gotten. You have many scent choices, including a neutral scent. Suggest you buy these at dollar tree or a similar store, as they have bigger bottles typically. But the price is so low that it really doesn't matter a whole ton. Grocery stores are just completely bound to social expectations because people who don't have money go to the dollar store to get their shit. There is no circumstance that a normal poor person buys Busch scented soap. The effect that would have PROVES that is has to be rich people shit.

Buy something decent and just keep using it. V05 doesn't have any decent competitor on price and quality. The only one that's so cheap that nothing else is worth getting imo.

Suave Tropical Coconut is cheap, works well and the scent isn't too strong.

Old spice has some decent conditioners that smell more earthy, you probably need to go somewhere other than a grocery store though

Yes, which is why you should use it.

(just buy regular head and shoulders or something)

There's probably a guide to make your own conditioner at home written by some paranoid middle aged Midwestern germphobe. Isn't it just oil and cocoa butter?

If you're a fella odds are you have short hair, in which case you could wash your hair with detergent and your hair probably be fine (eyes and lungs a different story), you're just gonna cut the hair off and regrow it soon anyway
