I've decided that either nothing will happen, or the world will end in nuclear hellfire and so nobody will be around to own me for saying that nothing will happen

edit: turns out there were people around to own for me for saying that nothing will happen, I am truly in hell (jk, solidarity to the working class in the area actually going through hell)

There's that sunny Obama-era foreign policy. We've ticked all the boxes now. Let's get a Black Eyed Peas song going and get this over with.

For years I only ever heard the radio edit for that song, so now even though I know what is actually is my brain always defaults to "let's get it started"

I'll never forget the joy I had proving it was the original version to my dad and brother after they insisted it was parody all day

Yet in our world of increasing dangers, it is significant that the United States spends much less per capita on civil defense than many other countries.

      wow

. . . Are they comparing police budgets for certain states to entire military budgets in other countries? Because even then . . . . we're pretty close

New York’s police budget is bigger than all but like five or six countries military budgets

So what's the gimmick? "We're calling the police budget for Shitbucket County in Nowhere, Montana "civil defense" and it's lower than the budget for India's army :isaac-pog: "

IMO if nukes start landing in the US and Russia then it's all over for everyone on earth anyway. If something like 5% of the world's nuclear weapons were to go off that's enough fallout and nuclear winter to kill just about everyone on earth.

What kind of mask prevents you from inhaling radioactive material?

      • barrbaric [he/him]

Depends on the material. Active charcoal filters are necessary for radioactive gases but I think generally you'd be okay with P100 filters or equivalent.

Note: in the event of a nuclear war we all die anyway so it doesn't really matter.

Its tough to say. I would hope that cooler minds would prevail. But with the US telling its citizens to get out of Ukraine and this I just don't know. The US is a crumbling empire, but its still got the capacity to do a lot of damage in the world. Of course this could all just be the Biden admin being blowhards to come off as tough both domestically (to improve his approval rating) and abroad (as a warning to Russia and China).

That's what worries me honestly, the US did this same shit during the Cold War and its opponents could never be sure either.

And I thought trump would be the one that push US closer to ww3. Creepy Joe truly outperform Trump at being Trump. The dude might end up worst than trump, an amazing feat to accomplish

The US has been caught in insane and self destructive situations many times before, but there was always a Lincoln or an FDR or a Kennedy to pump the brakes and lead it through the crisis. Right now there's just Biden and a cabinet full of neoliberal yesmen and failures from the Obama era.

I truly wonder if there is anybody at the top that can/will actually pull the breaks on something happening. Recent events give me the vibe that we may just bumble along assuming something bad won't happen and when it does nobody will be able to stop it.

The German is the only one that could negotiate with the Russian here since they have quite investment on Russian oil. The west are slowly turning against German for their recent action

Yeah our military isn't really geared for conventional warfare after 20 years of asymmetrical warfare.

Absolutely shameful showing from France. Is this what Jupiterianism is?

It's absurd how the internet commenters vilify the German government for having a minimal pro-diplomacy anti-escalation stance (if they were serious they would kick out the US nukes of course)

Biden needs to look like a tough guy to try and pump his numbers going into the midterms. They'll try to set up the rousing speech with Biden strolling down the East room corridor (ripping off one of Obama's best moves) to the podium to make a rousing speech and a finger wag at Putin......

So, who has odds on him tripping on the walk down, getting up but forgetting where he is, looking into the camera at millions of people around the globe and crapping his pants?
