As socialists we need to be smart and do stuff that Democrats would never do, like reach across the aisle and give Republicans anything they ask for.

Makes me feel weird thinking that Michael Brooks would have probably been in that general orbit if he was still around. He talked about cancel culture a lot and that always felt off to me

His sister claimed he disliked idpol after he passed, but he always seemed very enthusiastic about Social justice causes outside of the economic sphere. He did complain about 'Cancel culture' along with Ben Burgis quite a bit, but I never thought he was a class only type of guy or anything.

Yeah I remember that. Didn't even bother reading it, never liked Ben as much as Michael.

You want someone who's really bad though, take a look at Angela Nagle. I honestly think she was a closet bigot tbf. She wrote a very weird article about Ireland and immigration.

Yeah, Ben's always sucked. Shortly before Michael passed, I remember there was a Chris Rock clip that started circulating where he said that maybe not all cops are bad, but some jobs that's not good enough. Like, an airline can't say "most of our pilots like to land". Michael brought Ben on and he legit spent 15 minutes explaining that joke word by word, it was excruciating. This has nothing to do with him having chud-light opinions, it's just my most vivid memory of his appearances on TMBS.

Handful of months back Coffin started inviting Maupin onto their channel to do some signal boosting.

They seem okay when it comes to established theory but Coffin does seem to have some dog shit takes on things new. Last thing I can remember was them being anti-"degrowth" but not actually engaging with any concepts/articles/etc and just assuming that the "degrowth" meant "going backwards."

Haven't listened this since Brie started claiming she 'beat chomsky in a debate'. She didn't beat chomsky, nor did she 'explain' anything to Chomsky like she claimed. The man's been doing this almost longer than anyone on the left. I'm sorry brie, but you aren't explaining nothing to Chomsky.

There's one thing with disliking Chomskys electoralism and challenging him on it and there's another with deluding yourself into thinking you're some superior intelligence to him after the fact.

I had some fun following Twitter during Bernie 2020, and through that summer, but I haven't checked in since the protests (so a good 18 months) until these past couple weeks with the invasion. I was always on the left-edge of the "Bernie spectrum", but it was interesting to see where a lot of people in me feed have fallen since. Had to unfollow a lot of liberal dweebs, was almost funny.

this is part of why cryptosectarianism is so dumb here - everyone was doing pretty brazen cartwheels that the podmemers had dunked on the lib left grandpa back then, whereas people that liked chomsky were the only ones asking 'why is everyone interpreting this as a serious blow for anarchism'

No, but it's clumsy as hell if you're trying to build a media career (especially with a left audience). Maybe I'm just not the audience, but I feel like a photo of you grabbing a handful of poop is less harmful to a media career than writing about "cancel culture", even negatively.

She also decided to make it weird with an article or podcast titled "Are Jewish People White?" or something like that. There's an interesting conversation that can be had somewhere in there, but approaching the topic with such a lack of tact is pretty fucking cringy if you ask me. Seemed to me that she was doing it to fuel Twitter libs going off about "The Left is AntiSemitic!" and all that crap. Just some sort of brainworm like that idk.

i admit i've listened to like 2 episodes of Good Faith (e: that wasn't a joke, i genuinely forgot the name of the podcast), but i don't know where the expectation on this site comes from that Brie's, like, an idiot or a bad communicator or a cryptoreactionary or whatever, based solely on the fact that she's talking to people who suck. i know most left podcasts are recorded with audible bong bubbling noises, but there are ways to conduct interviews that aren't just passively nodding along.

        • Abraxiel
          ·

I agree that she's not at all incompetent or actually really bad faith. Sometimes her interview style is actually pretty conducive to a good conversation, too.

I have criticisms, but to avoid getting into that before I make my point: my previous comment probably came off wrong. I more properly meant that that sample was better than what I expected from this interview, and that it was because of Bri pushing for a specific example. Now I wish she repeated that, but yeah.

I've listened to a lot of Bad Faith, but I mostly stopped caring after the Norman Finkelstein interview where she kept pressing him on how him not liking Obama wasn't a winning strategy for voters and he kept trying to say that he didn't give a shit, Obama sucked, and also that's not the point.

        • Deadend [he/him]

Because a lot of people on here think “interview = platforming (bad)” When it’s a podcast from people who were not household names interviewing someone who was given an op-Ed spot in the biggest newspaper in America.

Platforming Would be a Joe Rogan style interview.

I am honestly getting annoyed with the number of posts on this site that actually would fit the mold of “reactionary left”. Like basically most of the comments on this post are attacking Bad Faith for trying to dig in on the new libertarian grifter.
