Apparently you can start the game as trans anyway (like cyberpunk) so the creators would clap for you and feel like they inspired you, unearned or not.

The actual lore is literally nonexistent. As you pointed out it would be logically inconsistent for her own world to work in anyway else then the way you mentioned so you can freely interpet that wizards are capable of having whatever physical traits they feel like with magic with such ease that its pointless to even mention it regardless if she as attempted to retcon things via Twitter or not.

Given the likely content matter...even piracy is a bit of an iffy decision for me, and I do love games with 19th-century fashion.

Not gonna blame anyone who does pirate and play, just can't personally stomach a literal fucking blood libel even if they don't see a cent.

I feel like this game would be way better if it was like an unlicensed modded counterstrike where you can play as the wizards or the antifascists, and you get to buy wands and potions and shit at the start of the round.

I'm all for pirating this game, boycotting it,etc. I think it's a touch reductive to say anyone who merely plays the game is a antisemetic racist terf. I mean there's a lot of games I've played that had super problematic shit in it and that doesn't automatically mean I endorse it (and I usually make a point to criticize it). And for example I also wouldn't say that someone is by necessity a racist if they enjoy Lovecraft or something... but yeah no one should give a cent to this game or Rowling. Fuck her.

That said, I've never read a HP book, seen one of the movies and I will never play this shitty game.

that logic would apply if she was a small time content creator and the money could help her build a platform or whatever, but she's a billionaire who wrote the best selling novel of a generation. the money doesn't matter at this point.

i don't care about the game, but trying to pin down someone's ethics through video game consumption is weird, especially when it's something as mainstream as Harry Potter.

If you buy this game you are transphobic, antisemitic, and racist.

    :very-intelligent:

Meh. Most people who buy this game are just clueless, content-hungry Consumerists. The message will reinforce a generation's worth of priors about Labor Activists being violent thugs and Proles being ugly creepy losers that the PMC class constantly needs to police. But it no more makes you a bigot than listening to Kid Rock makes you Anti-Vax.

Also the lead designer / writer of the game is a far-right misogynist who ran an “anti-sjw” youtube channel:

Shocked to discover management class types would do this.

Hollywood is full of bigots and freaks and sickos. You don't need to go to Lucas. Just look at Roman Polanski.

Hermione apparently also being black canonically makes Joanne mocking her being an abolitionist even more bigoted.

Hermione is literally described as having white skin in the books. This was just a cynical retcon. Either way it’s fucked up.

Rita Seeker is obviously trans coded and her character is centered around being deceptive, conniving, and predatory.

For real? This is one I’d never caught. Then again, RK seems to describe every single woman she doesn’t like as having “mannish” hands

nah that one I can believe. Like transphobia is from ignorance, and having your whole social knowledge challenged, after which people lash out. Unjustly ofc.

Tf did Judaism ever do to ppl?

Bigots lashing out when challenged is unsurprising and they still deserve a bullet.

1000%. Do you know why people, like at the individual level, are antisemitic? Maybe it's just because I'm trans, but i've never even met a Jewish person, that I can't really imagine antisemites.

Aye, I get that, at the cultural level, but I'm wondering how people as individuals "justify it". Transphobia is cultural, social conditioning, and gnc ppl go against that social conditioning. So I can see how the social conditioning being broken can be "scary", esp for conservatives.

That I can't really imagine antisemitism might be because 75% of my country's Jewish population was killed by the Nazis, so maybe that says enough

That does say a lot on its own, but the individualistic justifications are pretty boilerplate bigotry. Everything from “it’s just a joke don’t make a big deal about it” to “they’re exclusively responsible for the societal changes that I don’t like”

anti-semitism is somewhat incomparable to transphobia in that it's infinitely more insidious, it's found in most of anti-communist rhetoric even if it's not blatant. people don't go "all jews should [minecraft words]" out loud because it's a super taboo to say it out loud, but there's hellla dogwhistles. half of anti-capitalist rhetoric you'll hear from chuds is just them swapping jews out with bankers or billionaires verbally, unfortunately. it's also genuinely the initial basis for like, 90% of white supremacist rhetoric, believe it or not.

speaking as a trans jew myself, transphobia is more of an outward reaction to a change in our societal workings, anti-semitism is moreso subtly baked into the very fabric of our society. fundamentally incomparable, both are major issues

You don’t look super hard. There’s tons of people who say “da Jews” are the secret cabal ruining everything. They just got good at hiding it or presenting it in a way that people don’t pick up as outright anti-semitism post holocaust.

Either way hateful ignorant tropes are hateful ignorant tropes and don’t need to be compared to other forms of oppression. We can focus on more than one thing at a time

Rowling has, at the very least, a very liberal type of ignorant racism that can come from privilege, it has informed a lot of aspects of the books. Literally just about anytime a character that isn’t white is portrayed there’s some kind of sketchy element, even if it’s just lazy racist naming convention like “Cho Chang.”

Saying it’s a conspiracy theory thinking to notice the entire web of ambient white British racism in her work is, I think, being entirely too generous. But I do think it’s maybe fair to say that it’s extra highlighted bc of what an outright bigot she is to trans people

Her racism isn’t overtly or loudly white supremacist but it’s still pretty problematic, and part of the status quo, which is probably why you’re inclined to be so lenient, and still worth noting and calling out bc it helps reify that ideology in more insidious ways that tend to be imperceptible to greater liberal culture

Oh, I'm not saying that Rowling isn't the sort of racist you're describing and there are some very sketchy stuff in Harry Potter books, chiefly the whole slave elves thing.

But when people bringing up bank floor ornaments with a straight face, I start rolling my eyes.

Yeah I think it’s more unfortunate than anything. But it does highlight how people are generally blind to how damaging, and invisible, these tropes are that at no point during the shooting anyone notice and thought to remove it and how easily it’s hand waived away. Certainly its not a conscious choice, but it just adds icing on the ignorance cake that’s already going on

The goblins in the lore are never depicted as totally liberated. The wizards continue to ban sentient magical creatures from owning wands, casting certain spells, living in certain areas, using money, etc. In fact, in the seventh book, the main characters try to get help from one goblin to break into a bank and are planning to trade him a mystical sword for his trouble, although their plan the entire time is to simply trick him and keep the sword for themselves.

The characters will point out how goblins and other magical creatures are oppressed, they might even be sad about it, like Dumbledore laments it at one point, but literally nothing is done to change anything. The best they can get is maybe a nicer person will run the oppressive government. Maybe the slaves will get a nicer master. can you guess JK's ideological position here

yeah antisemitism is generally something that is super subtly reinforced comparative to, say, transphobia, so yeah it is 100% not a tiny detail for me the fact that one of the largest book franchises has that blatant a connection to antisemitic stereotypes and the fact that the movies chose to reinforce it with those tiny details.

I'm not all that invested in this so I probably won't Google it, but the size isn't really the point. I'm not saying that Rowling personally placed a Star of David in the background just to make sure nobody missed her antisemitism, but I also find it hard to believe that nobody suggested that it might not be such a good idea to film a scene about a sub-human race of Goblin bankers while using a Jewish bank as your backdrop.

I want to be clear that I'm 100% certain that this take will be correct. The game is going to be fucking awful. But it's technically possible that the game goes in a different direction, analyzes and criticizes the source material, and ends up being good or at least playable. That isn't going to happen, the lead designer for the game was a gamergate guy (was because he got fired, not because he changed) so that's a good sign of where the game is going. Also, listen to Shriekcast.
