I mean, there was an argument for some amount of sprawl when your entire economy revolved around harvesting wheat and corn.
But even historic developments had the concept of a Main Street and a relatively dense central business district. Now we just lay down pavement for shits and giggles.
I picked up cities skylines again and I've been making planned high density residential areas, each area has a central metro station that connects it to the other areas of the city, and several "arms" or blocks that are connected to the metro station with buses/trams and walking paths. Shit gives me so much seratonin that I'm surprised the government hasn't illegalized it yet.
I know it's a game and not real life, but this shit isn't rocket science and yet we're still building cities like drunk toddlers in the year of our lord 2022.
My gripe with cities skylines is that modern European cities are basically impossible to create (without a ton of dedication and mods). It was made with American style cities in mind.
Outrageous that basically ALL of the buildings need to be placed roadside. Why the fuck are pedestrian paths not enough, and I need to put a park on a road? At least there are mods that have zoneable pedestrian paths, and TM:PE allows you to restrict traffic to just emergency vehicles. Sucks for console players, though.
Edit: also, the lack of small train stations in the vanilla game is unforgivable. The only one available is like a damn city block, did the developers never ride a train through an urban area before? The fancier ones are basically big sheds with a couple bathrooms and a ticket kiosk.

I had a starting area of low density that had a more extensive tram network and some buses to get people to the metros. After I unlock high density zoning, I basically stop using low density all together, too many ugly-ass roads.
I'm always stunned by just how worked up suburbanites get over other people's lawns.
it's really funny they go to great effort and expense to make their lawns look like the lawn owned by a european who gives zero shits about their lawn.
I'm from a culture big on privacy at home and the sight or suburban homes with open, identical yards is anxiety inducing to me.

Driving in/around the kansas turnpike in topeka is absolute hell. I got cut off and forced into an exit. That exit took me to a road that had ZERO turnaround points or exits for 35 miles.
I had to drive 35 to turn around, 35 back just to fucking leave town.....in 100°f summer heat....no a/c. Only place worse than topeka for driving is south Florida.

I currently live like this, and it's heaven. This being America, I still need a car to go anywhere outside my little community.
Why would you want the density of Paris? That kind of cramped living is expensive and borderline inhumane.
It's an extreme example, but even at a quarter of the density of Paris (comparable to large parts of LA), you could easily fund a small, but reliable transit system and frankly have the city small enough that a lot of trips could easily be done on bike or foot.
