If I've never watched Star Trek outside of the Chris Pine movies, where should I start? I can't promise I'll follow through on this, but I'm just wondering.

Some classic episodes you probably don’t need to know much background:

      • TNG -“Inner Light”
      • TNG - “Measure of a Man”
      • DS9 - “Hard Time”
      • DS9 - “Far Beyond the Stars”
      • DS9 - “The Visitor”
      • DS9 - “In the Pale Moonlight” (might need some background for this one)

Watch The Next Generation. First 2 seasons are not great, you can watch them later. Just watch these:

      • Season 1 Episode 1
      • Season 1 Episode 13
      • Season 1 Episode 26
      • Season 2 Episode 9
      • Season 2 Episode 16
      • Any other recommendations from others here.

Then watch Season 3 and on, preferably every episode. AMAZING.

Then watch all of Deep Space 9 in order.

Again the first season isn't amazing, but it's worth watching. It's better than TNG's first season. The later seasons are AMAZING. Watch it in order. It's not completely serialized, but it's still a lot better when you treat it as a serial. DS9 was my least favorite Trek when I saw random episodes as a kid, and now it's my absolute favorite.

There's a lot of other good Star Trek but those are the best. In one episode of DS9 a Ferengi becomes radicalized by an Irish communist descendant of a union miner, organizes a union under threat of death, and directly quotes Karl Marx.

Yeah, I was looking through the TNG episodes one by one, finding which are absolutely worth seeing, and I ended up just listing every episode from season 3 onward. I think it's just worth following what you recommended, seasons 3+ has like an 85% hit or miss ratio.

@GalaxyBrain if they still post is a big trekhead that'll recommend something along the lines of starting at season 3 of TNG (1-2 and great but rough around the edges).

i started TNG ep 2 (the naked now) and it is hokey as all get out but it made the show less intimidating. it's slop, but it's GOOD slop.

Stick with it - it’s worth it.

Have you watched other Trek series before? Which have you enjoyed?

Loved TNG, really like Lower Decks, working through TOS and working through DS9. I think the space station is just gloomier. It feels like there's less WONDER of space and more realpolitik stuff

Sounds like you’ve got the same taste as me then! You’re right about there being less “wonder of space” stuff than the other series, but in return you get some of the best Trek that’s been written IMO.

If you liked the TNG episodes that really got into more of the philosophy of things with stuff like Data’s rights as a sentient being etc then you’ve got some absolutely breathtaking episodes ahead of you. I don’t want to spoil anything, but it’s very much worth hanging around for.

Also, there’s some episodes that are just outright fun, and it’s a Trek show that outright has entire episodes about Marxism and does not fuck around in explicitly showing that communism is a force for good. You’ve got characters discussing Marx and throwing punches to defend it.

I’ve been rewatching the show for 20 years and I envy you getting to see it for the first time.

I think the end of season 2 is when they start doing more travel. There is an iconic ship eventually as a response to that complaint. The alien content and dilemmas are more interesting to me than TNG's, they just don't yet have the impetus for it.

I've also been working my way through TOS.

Did you see the Nazi Planet episode? It's WILD
