This is shameful. This should not be happening in the richest country in the world. What a terrible place

US has some of the highest income inequality on earth. People just don't notice it because it's so extravagantly wealthy that even the poorest here live in comparative luxury to the poor in the developing world.

Don’t know about that. Life expectancy in some of the poorest pockets of the US matches third world countries

Yeah but you're comparing the poorest US to the average third world. True comparison is poorest US to the poorest 3rd world citizens.

Again, I'm not saying this is because "America good", it's just that this continent was never as densely populated as the old world, (except some parts of Mexico) so it's still extravagantly wealthy in terms of resources per person.

You can’t seriously claim that the weak ass safety net in the US actually serves its weakest citizens. Take a stroll through any homeless camp and tell me they have it as good as ‘average’ third world. No way. Deprivation sucks whether you are on skid row or Zimbabwe

You can’t seriously claim that the weak ass safety net in the US actually serves its weakest citizens.

I wasn't saying that it does.

Take a stroll through any homeless camp and tell me they have it as good as ‘average’ third world.

Your words, not mine. I didn't say the poorest Americans = average Indians. I said that comparing the poorest of one place to the average of another is not a true comparison. I said that because you said:

Life expectancy in some of the poorest pockets of the US matches third world countries

The real comparison would be comparing the poorest homeless people in the US to the poorest homeless people in India. And if you're comparing lifespans, weight, access to food, I will guarantee you that the US homeless will come out on top.

Again this is not to excuse US income inequality or say that the US system is somehow better. This is to point out the fact that the immense amount of resources in the US disguises the fact that the system is utterly broken, more broken than anything in India or African nations. Hence my original comment:

US has some of the highest income inequality on earth. People just don’t notice it because it’s so extravagantly wealthy that even the poorest here live in comparative luxury to the poor in the developing world.

I mean yes, probably, but on the other had this is exactly what my house looked like growing up on welfare, so, you know, it's just accurate as fuck, too.

Everything is either old (60s-era furniture and flooring) or plainly made of the cheapest possible substance (particle board, linoleum, toy plastics).

Same tbh, but it's not so much that the houses are messy, but the way that the photos are taken, I think? Many of them are literally taken from above, or while people's mouths are open, harshest possible lighting, etc. Just a vibe.

I really dislike the term food insecurity. It seems obfuscate the fact that what's really going on is they are poor so we are refusing to let them eat.

It's how they don't say they word "starvation." I got into an argument on reddit about how Cuba handles food insecurity better than the US and they said that starvation doesn't happen to children in the US, only murder because those parents are choosing to let the child starve. Choosing to let the child starve.

There is this girl at work that wont talk to me because I said native communities don't have food insecurity we are just refusing to give them food and she just assumed I meant that natives have lots of food.

It's amazing the degree to which if you don't follow the liberal discourse to the letter people just assume you are a chud.

I got into an argument on reddit about how Cuba handles food insecurity better than the US

The reason is that, other than the hundreds of US/euro embargoes, Cuba also has 3x the population density of the US.

That's it, has nothing to do with the US "handling it better".

My point is that they manage to feed their citizens better than we do, and a lot of their food is produced with polyculture urban gardening. It's pretty extraordinary.

Yeah they manage themselves 100x better than we do, but we have 1000x more resources so people are unable to see reality
