Some people are so baby brained that they think every piece of fiction should be Goofus and Gallant but with no Goofus.
Do they think the main character always has to be a perfect example of a human being? Mfw a children's cartoon has too much emotional depth for twitter.
There were multiple episodes of Adventure Time where Finn was awkward about relationships, being the last of your kind in the world and being raised by dogs will do that to you
Hell, one of those episodes had Finn taking advice from a pick-up artist book and explicitly said that behavior is bad and you shouldn't do it
I feel like a lot of people don't get that if you want to teach people lessons through character development, your character has to be relatable to the people you're teaching and that tends to mean having those shitty qualities to improve on.
It's culturally understood as a bad thing that people say about women (for obvious reasons), and not just a generally reactionary state of mind. So, many otherwise socially progressive people will get all offended at the idea of someone dating serially or having different consensual partners or whatever, because they have only associated the badness of reactionary sexual moralism policing with the context of it being employed against women.
That and chuds
2010s cartoons were all about characters struggling to learn empathy, if they don't make mistakes then the shows would be over after season 1 (didn't watch regular show)
In gravity falls there's this big arc where Dipper (main boy) convinces his crush to break up with her toxic bf but quickly learns that being a better person than the ex doesn't give him the right to be her boyfriend and they never get together
Yup and also another episodes that gives him a similar taste of what it's like dealing with an even younger crush (he legit is like "oh wow that's bad and I need to stop doing the same to Wendy").
He actually goes back in time 10 years and meets Wendy, he gets to see the exact same thing with the age difference going the other way. By that point in the show all the tension is gone and they are able to work together and be honest with each other, it's a good arc
The clip is funny, he was pretty much over it but he really comes to terms with why he was wrong https://youtu.be/5p3SekdtKxw
Yeah I honestly love Dipper and his development over the show (kinda wish they gave the same to Mables instead of rushing it for the finale though I still like how they addressed her own insecurities here and there).
My hot take is people who watch children shows and argue about them on the internet are more annoying than marvel stans that compare everything to capeshit, but slightly less annoying than harry Potter stans that compare everything to wizshit on the grounds Harry Potter has literally been rammed into the ground for decades at this point yet still somehow stays in the brains of the most insufferable shitlibs you'll ever know.
I recall Finn's bad romantic behaviors/choices being framed as bad in the show. And not even for comedic effect. Weren't they all portrayed as learning/growth moments?
Definitely. everyone was like “dude you’re fucking up.”
He and fp reconciled eventually and he went on to have healthier relationships in general with more respect
Yeah. Like Adventure Time was really big on the whole didactic morality play thing. Which is great for a children's cartoon!
i have thoughts on this but i refuse to engage in internet discourse about childrens cartoons
But the Fin and Flame Princess episode about it paints Fin as a literal spoiled baby man and the cosmic owl even calls him out for being such (i.e. "you blew it")? Heck even Mordecai has a episodes calling him out for being a mopey clingy loser when it comes to his relationships. Like there's a distinction in showing bad behavior and being like "this is not normal behavior for a healthy relationship" vs showing these bad behaviors and not saying anything or setting it as the norm . I'm honestly kind of confused on what this comment is about... (also Dipper he wasn't trying for a harem he was just getting numbers).
I disagree with several comrades here who refuse to engage critically with children’s media.
Doing media analysis via tweets, however…
