there basically stopped being a left wing from end 01 to early 03. even democrats were almost afraid to oppose anything said or done by the republicans (I was way too young to know what leftists were doing then). even calling yourself a liberal was treated as if you had just screamed "allah ackbar" and showed a bomb vest. it was an insane time period
To be a non-warmongering lib in '02 was basically social suicide. Literally everyone wanted to start a war with any country remotely east of Morocco. Every. Single. Person.
And then 5 years later everyone pretended they opposed war(s) and W and Cheney and whomever/whatever. And then Obummer told us all we needed was hope and poof no one gave 2 fucks for another 10+ years.

I'd say the Republicans have unoffically won since Reagan. Since then, every Democrat elected into the presidency has repeated Republican talking points in an attempt to appeal to the mythical moderate. Even when they lose, Republicans continue to govern the country and get most of what they want.
