I wonder what happens in a society when trust in institutions reaches historic lows and said institutions enact wildly unpopular laws amidst massive inequality and financial uncertainty. If only there were some examples somewhere in human history from which we could draw parallels. Ah well.

To be fair, the definition of the word was never changed. Recessions were always determined by a bunch of clerics from like Harvard and Chicago econ departments. The system is dumb as hell, but as with everything else the Biden admin literally did not do anything.

Anecdotally, it seems to me the GOP is picking up some voters simply because they're seen as the "winners" who are at least "getting things done". This is mostly from white folks who have completely incoherent ideologies; and who are generally tuned out to politics in general.

It's like, even if the GOP is just getting awful things done... people like winners. If you don't actually care about anything, it might seem like the GOP is "tough" and getting their way, while Dems do nothing but whine and capitulate.

There's definitely a type of liberal which is obsessed with the idea of "getting things done" , with no regard to what those things actually are. That's one of the reasons so many of them like the West Wing, with a liberal lion who "gets things done" like dismantling social security :isaac-pog:

fuck that's depressing. at least the old german nazis didn't hate trains. or want the literal apocalypse.

      Onion joke or real life?...

A pollster is utterly flummoxed by the idea that people tend not to vote for the Democrats when they are angry at, depressed by, despondent about, and disgusted by the Democrats. “I struggle to wrap my head around this disconnect,” said Rark Mozell.

i was talking to this tow truck driver yesterday and mentioned casually that i was waiting on doing some things around the house until material prices came down, and he popped off. he was like, "that is never gonna happen with the absolute idiot in the white house. that guy is brain dead. and trump was too! what is with all these super old millionaires being in charge? they need to get out of the way and let us try something else." for reference, this guy was like 40.

i tried to lighten the mood and make a joke about how i thought biden had been dead for 6 months and they had him propped up like Weekend At Bernie's, but over the noise of the work, all he heard was Bernie and he just said, "we weren't lucky enough to get Bernie." and then just shook his head and went back to what he was doing.

it was kind of intense. like i had nothing to do with his rant. as a rule, i don't bring up anything partisan with people, because so much of the messaging is blue/red maga. but this guy had apparently just been steaming and was looking to rant about how fucked everything is.

dunno how or if that dude regularly :vote: , but the hate for biden is some real shit. and it seems like the longer dems deny it, the realer it's getting.

People are really stressed out right now.

i won't be voting for anyone who doesn't identify as at least a demsoc. and only if they have a cool/funny name. otherwise, i play to go in, cough on all the voters (I live in CHUDland), and leave.

I still think local elections matter somewhat if only to help things like affordable housing, parks, and stymie christofascists a bit in the community.

      • ClimateChangeAnxiety [he/him, they/them]
        ·

In so many places even shit like that isn’t on the table. In my fairly left/lib small city our local elections look like “Small business owner, small business owner, entrepreneur, small business owner, christofascist psychopath”

Of the people running in the last city council election the best policies offered were “Maybe look into possibly getting electricity prices down” (we have some of the highest energy prices in the country), and “Don’t increase the police budget as much as the others wanted to”

The politics in my city honestly seem to not even comprehend the possibility that the government has any control whatsoever over housing in any way. There’s not a single unit of public housing in this city and I don’t think anyones even considered it as a possibility.

:shrug-outta-hecks: they send the thing to my house, I fill in the "not psychopath" bubbles and mail it back it takes like 10 minutes. Beyond that im not involved and see shit getting worse and worse around me. I don't blame anyone for not voting.

:yea: i do the same, but it feels just as pointless as voting in the national elections if not more so. The national elections at least change up the tv show I get to watch while everything collapses, the local elections are completely run by local capital and each faceless ghoul is basically identical to the next

I guess the way I see it is while most of the choices are still shit, some of the people (in my area) are more inclined to listen to orgs that are trying to improve material conditions for people and not just taking heaps of cash and gifts to let industry do whatever they want. I don't see enough defense of working class interests but there are always environmental, tax allocation initiatives for parks, schools, urgent care, weed stuff etc on the ballot.

Some candidate might be more inclined help reallocate funding for housing rather than police or not try to defund shelters, shit like that. I've definitely seen a difference in the last 10 years as my area has become more red, having both used social services and known people working in the field. The hostility toward workers and unhoused has gotten noticibly worse as local politics have gone from garden variety corrupt liberal to psychopath conservative.

Fun fact, Dwayne Wade and his wife, actress Gabrielle Union, have a trans child they're amazingly supportive of. Also, Wade's close friend, LeBron James, tweeted congrats to the cast of Pose in a post dedicated to the accomplishments of black women. LeBron James is from Hexbear's favorite city, Akron, Ohio.

There were like two months leading up to the Jayland Walker murder where there was a story involving Akron on here like every other day. An old golf courses turned into a park , a house where John Brown lived, proud boys punching a black woman on the street. It just seemed like Akron was the center of the hexbear universe.

Democrats won't pass anything of substance that affects anyone's life positively, can't stop republicans from winning elections, and can't even stop republican assault on our rights while they're in charge. "What's the point?" is the rational perspective for those of us paying attention. I do believe things will get worse when Trump is president again in 2025, but democrats can't stop republicans from winning. :vote: most important election of our lives democracy is on the ballot
