13 years for no crime
last i checked, being a redditor's great grand uncle WAS a crime in the USSR and tbh that's how it should be.
Something like 90+% of people in the GULAG system were in there for regular, boring old crimes.
Meanwhile, westerners were getting put in work camps for vagrancy like the free people they were
That's different. Being arrested for felony homelessness is a crime and has no political character! And stop saying there are more people in the US prison system both in absolute numbers and per capita than were ever in the GULAG system!
It's a bit hard to find the total number of Americans that have gone through the prison system since u.s history spans 200 years, but if we at least use the graph here showing the the rise of incarceration in the states, we can see the u.s easily imprisoned millions from roughly the 1987 to now. And in the rough 30 year on the graph, and on current prisoner data you can extrapolate there being somewhere between 30-50 million Americans that've gone to prison. More than the "18,000,000 thatve gone to the Gulag camps" if we use the anti-communist dogmatists own numbers.
I'm going to work, ask for more info later.
... and getting paid fairer wages for the work done while imprisoned than prisoners in the West.
The maximum sentence you could get in the gulag system was five years so his family just made shit up

I'm sorry to hear that your great grandfather came to Canada. No one should ever have to be in Canada.
fun canada fact: after ww2 and during the cold war, because of the rising leftist sentiment among ukrainian immigrants, canada started only admitting anti-communist ukrainians, usually inspecting their tattoos and finding a nazi symbol (or another related one) and assume that because they were a nazi or sympathetic to nazis, they are anti communist
Our Ukrainian Mennonite ancestors instantly turned into Mormons overnight upon reaching Canada, based on my and my partner's family history.
