It did have fanservice moments that were cringe, but other than that, yes, it was wonderful. Its years-later extra seasons "Revolution" and "Evolution R" were actually quite nice too.
Do you like, even watch anime at this point? Do you think when the average Japanese person watched Demon Slayer they were frustrated that the story featured younger characters instead of some 35yo salary man?
Do you think when millions of people watched SpyxFamily which predominantly featured a child as a main character last season they were instead reminiscing on the good old days of 1980s anime?
All of the criticism about the pedo side of the industry is all fine, accurate and justified, but this sort of circle jerk is realy just pathetic honestly.
It is almost like we need daily reminders that most people in Japan don't actualy care about Cowboy Bebop and Eva that much, and like it or not anime is made for them not us.

All media has gotten worse since the 70s in the US and the 90s in japan as the contradictions of capitlaism have intensified. The even the handfull of good anime are released despite thr market not because of it. The tears of the workers being being baked in only make it less worthy of faor consideration.

My criticism of your entertainment doesn't threaten your entertainment. Your petty personal attacks in this thread don't even meaningfully protect that entertainment.
Since you conjured up an imaginary position where you're pretending I was demanding 35 year old salary men protagonists, I can just as easily (and probably more accurately) remind you that "adult" typically means 18 and older, and since so much contemporary anime that you seem to be angrily defending here is often focused on sexually objectifying dubiously-aged and often visibly childlike characters (or "looks, acts, and/or talks like a child but is actually a 1000 year old half dragon half angel half vampire" characters) for a number of reasons, what you seem to be defending is... questionable.
I also find abrasive and insult-laden personal attacks, all in some misguided (and unnecessary) defense of treats, to be "just pathetic honestly" as you put it first.
To use more of your own words, there is also frequent "circle jerk" of treat defending that often happens when the treats are criticized, usually with "let people enjoy things" thought terminating cliches and "touch grass" mantras in response of any/all criticism of some entertainment or another.

I still contend that in the balance that visibly adult characters were more common before the turn of the century. Also, while on the surface teenagers may be the stated audience, the fanservice-drenched merch-associated slop is consistently made for the same targeted group of big-spender otaku and on average they aren't getting any younger.
That's generally caused because nobody really ages out of watching the teen targeted stuff. Even today you can slap a 30+year old in front of Pokemon and they'll enjoy it like they were young and watching the first series again.
Since the older group doesn't age out but you still want to target the younger group, not much reason to exclude an audience by targeting only the older group.
All these decisions are economic. Especially in anime these days which is ruthlessly run by the publishing committees.
I still argue there's timeless kid-friendly stuff like Pokemon then there's fanservice-loaded kiddie-creeping stuff that can say "for teens" when the real revenue source (and they know it) is aging otaku.
That's true but it's caused by the same effect. It doesn't hurt the teen audience but it does attract the adult audience, also provides internet marketing through sharing shit.
This is in fact also a problem in western media imo. More and more content is hyper-sexualised even targeted at younger audiences because the older audience watches the franchise still and never stopped.

None of the kids tv network targeted at teens ever was, Disney, Nickelodeon, even Cartoon Network. All the shows have teens or sometimes younger in them.
He-man and GI were mostly afults. Every teen drama has actors that are like 30+

But this is the same era as the era of anime we're talking about. He-Man is 80s.
The point is how much it has changed. A lot of people will get the wrong perspective on new content in the west because of marvel movies, but the marvel shit is all a holdover from the 80s too.
This screenshot reminds me of how much I miss this art style. Anime had a more down to earth feel to it back then.
It felt like it was portraying something based on real people, even with stylized abstractions. It wasn't yet copy of a copy of a copy pandering to otakus by otakus for otakus who lacked interest or experience with living people. :miyazaki-laugh:
Around the time Azumaga Daioh's "waifu" meme really took off in the early 2000s, there was a steep increase in waifu moeblob otaku pandering trash being churned out to maximize profits (otakus buy the merch) and a decline in the prioritizing or production of most anything else. What did get made started to more often require more and more waifu moeblob fanservice smeared over it. :pathetic:

watchmen is more readable than any comic it inspired. similarly, azumanga daioh is more watchable than basically anything inspired by it.
