Non-human beings are our comrades :vegan-liberation-rad: :vegan-v:
Remember the rules; in particular, this comm is for vegans only. Feel free to discuss anything from beans :bean: to your undying and eternal hatred for carnists. :frog-no-pretext:
:vegan-edge: Veganism isn't a diet, it's about animal liberation.
Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose

I like not having to worry about my lactose intolerance. Turns out if you only eat plants, you don't gotta worry about taking enough lactaid.
That was what really led me to eating more vegan food. I was tired of stomach pain, constant diarrhea, hating food, and horrible acne. I got rid of dairy and it all went away
I was also surprised with just how dramatic the difference was. The closest comparison would be when I dropped fast food
I never even considered I was lactose intolerant until the horrible, painful, have-to-lie-down-in-bed stomach aches I used to get a few times every year went away completely once I went from vegetarian to vegan. Like I honestly thought those stomach aches were just an unavoidable part of my life and a consequence of living in a society lmao.
But then again, I've also heard that like two-thirds of the human adult population has lactose intolerance, so I suppose my anecdote isn't all that surprising.
I learned to make kimchi so I could make kimchi fried rice, it's always a nice treat.
I'm going to have a friend staying with me for a while, so I'm excited to see what we'll cook together! We're both vegan and love cooking. I hope she shows me some recipes I can add to my rotation
That’s awesome! I’ve been staying over at some relatives (who aren’t vegan) so I’ve had to deal with the customary carnist questioning:
- why are you vegan?
- wait you can’t have even this thing?
- cmon, you can have a little bit.
Etc etc etc.
I made a lentil curry with fresh naan the other day and it was beyond incredible. This was my first time having fresh, homemade naan and I don't think I can ever go back to storebought. It was like little pillows covered in flavor and I'm already planning on making it again. It was also the first time I made a yeasted dough and it was way easier than I thought it would be.
Wow that sounds incredible. I've thought about making it before, but always used store bought out of laziness lol. You may have convinced me to actually make some next time
It's a little time consuming waiting for the yeast to rise but I had to run and get an errand done so it was basically ~10 minutes or so of making the dough, doing the thing I needed to do for about an hour, and then another 10 minutes of effort rolling and cooking them. Here's the recipe I used if you want to try it.
Oooh. Fresh Indian bread is incredible. You should puris, paranthas, kulchas etc next.
I would love to try making any and all of them. Do you have any recipes you recommend? If not I'm sure I'll be able to find some
So I tried making paratha today (not that recipe because I didn't have all of the flours) and it was very pleasant. I had one with a vegan pesto that was fantastic and will be eating the rest with lentil curry soon. I had a taste already and I'm very excited for the full meal
Those both look great. I will absolutely be making paratha soon since that looks amazingly easy. And the curry sounds incredibly tasty. I think I'm missing a few ingredients but I will be sure to try that one soon too.
I played a RPG with my friends last weekend where we were space cowboys rustling up a bunch of these aliens that "only eats other predators" to bring them to a wildlife sanctuary.
I convinced the GM that my character was also vegan, and that the alien would be able to sniff that out and not eat me. Made the job a lot easier.
The brightest part of my week is when I know im not alone in being :im-vegan:
It's so tiring to exist in this world. Even on sites like this which are supposed to be cool and good, we have disgusting awful fucking chuds bragging about how much suffering they cause. How in the world am I supposed to empathize or work with people who happily, proudly participate in the murder and exploitation of others for pleasure? It's exhausting. The fact that the site's moderators explicitly protect these people makes me unhappy to even hang around here. Any person I reply to has a pretty significant chance of coming around a few days later and talking about how much they love abusing animals and will get upset if you call them out for it, and if you call them out for it too much you risk getting banned from the site yourself. I've genuinely never felt this way before because I've never really had expectations of a site before, but it feels sincerely unsafe to me. Or ... uncomfortable. I don't know the word. I just don't like it here anymore.
Also I'd just like to add that I hope the admins ban me for my "slave owners should be killed" comment in response to that carnist chud in the other thread, because it would be so fucking funny to be banned from this site for the same thing we got banned from Reddit as a whole for. Please let it happen.
jesus, just went and saw this pathetic display of sad edgelord shit :(
just want to say i always appreciate your posts on this site, youre one of the most steadfast voices here standing up against cruelty to animals and it sucks that you get so much shit for it from insecure carnists
:meow-hug: I appreciate it. It's just difficult. It would be like if we had a significant chunk of users who were proud landlords and said "stop lecturing me about my job" if you pointed out why that's evil and the mods would ban you if you make too much of a struggle session about landlords because that would make all the landlord users upset. Just this weird black hole of empathy that exists on this site for some reason, where it's pretty much cool regarding every other issue. People will at least listen and learn (or get banned) if you're calling them out for racism or sexism or transphobia or liberalism or imperialism or anti-sex-worker talking points or any of that shit, but the moment you point out that maybe it's wrong to have a slave class which you harvest for their organs because you think they taste good suddenly you're being unreasonable, you're just supposed to coexist with people who support that system.
And it just comes back down to the fact that, as I understand it, some of the site mods are proud slave owners themselves so of course it's never going to be considered totally acceptable here to call people out for it.
if its any consolation at all, i really do think a lot of the omnis on this site are a lot closer to making the mental leap to veganism than they (or we) might think, and the reflexive hostility is often a reflection of their internalised guilt, cause you cant be a leftist on every other issue without knowing at some level that what youre doing is horrendously wrong.
i never did the tantrums like this person, but to my shame i was the defensive nonvegan leftist for faaaaaaaaaaar too long until i pulled my head out of my arse, and i recognise my own old thought processes in shit like this
our existence in their spaces is a constant reminder to them that they could and should be better, and i really do think we will eventually win with a lot of them
if its any consolation at all, i really do think a lot of the omnis on this site are a lot closer to making the mental leap to veganism than they (or we) might think
I agree with this. I've personally gotten messages from people I never thought would be vegan, who finally self crit and came around
I appreciate the positive vibes of your comment :)
It's really exhausting. We're supposed to do better as leftists. Removing an animal's autonomy and killing it for some sick need to eat corpses is not at all in line with our values. I don't understand people like this and they genuinely make me so uncomfortable. It's often the same few freakish carnists that genuinely seem to take pleasure in their abuse and murder of animals too
I really appreciate all the vegan comrades that stay here and the weekly mega is the most active it's ever been. I hope you stick around, because seeing you dunk on carnists is great and you're a cool person to talk to anyway
:anarchy-heart: I logged off for a bit. It was good. :comfy-cool:
Get the fuck out of this community you disgusting freakish monster from a horror movie, this is not your place to support animal abuse.
One of our go to meals, but also add onions, bell peppers, poblanos or your spicy pepper of choice, and a zucchini. Then use enchilada sauce between the layers. It's some amount of steps but easy and soooo good
Can highly recommend. Just look out on the enchilada sauce, some brands use meat broth
Made this lovely stew yesterday with a red wine sauce with beetroots, butter beans and roasted tofu cubes. Was lovely, very rich flavour.
back from vietnam now and missing the huge amount of amazing vegan food they had over there :(
every vegan place here seems to be a trendy overpriced burger bar with just fake meat patties shoved on, which are just the laziest fucking way to do vegan food, and they do a massive disservice to portraying how good vegan food can be
they do a massive disservice to portraying how good vegan food can be
hard agree. I tried experimenting with veganism in college and got instantly turned to the notion from a dogshit food truck that heavily overused this terrible tasting fake cheese and mayo. FFS, a basic ass fried tofu with rice meal could've easily shown how delicious and healthy food is compared to eating corpses.
yeah no wonder people think veganism is expensive and shit when places showcase the worst aspects of vegan food that is desperately trying and failing to replicate the most bland :lmayo: carnist experience (and failing) at ridiculous prices, rather than (like you say) showcasing the other amazing recipes you can make without animal products
reposting this post i made a little while ago cos i miss this place so much and imagine if this is what more vegan eateries were like, i reckon a lot of people would have very different ideas about vegan food
Yeah they're awful about doing any self crit when it comes their support of such a horrific industry. Truly the ultimate treat defenders, who would inflict cruelty on entire species because it's too difficult to give up a meal they like
Veganism is one of the best topics for turning an alarming number of non-vegan leftists into reactionaries on the spot. How are you gonna overthrow capitalism when you can't even overthrow the chicken nuggs from your dinner plate?
why did Deb ate a vegan, that doesn't seem like a very vegan-like thing to do
the vegan was organically pasture-raised on their uncles farm and lived a good life before being humanely and ethically slaughtered so whats the problem?
Anyone on here old enough to have been vegan during the epic bacon years? I was in high school then and it was absolute hell.
When I think about what made me go vegetarian - it was getting my first pet (guinea pig). I cared about my guinea pig, but realized people regularly kill and eat these animals. So I went vegetarian and thought that was enough. A decade later I finally met some vegans who taught me that it wasn't enough, so I went vegan
I just don't understand people who have pets or comment on how cute pics of animals are, but also want them dead so they can eat them. It's fucked up
Also it was great to take some time away from the site (personal stuff), and come back to seeing this thread so active! :avoheart:
