The content grind is probably not sustainable, and so I imagine that he's looking for something else to transition to. Becoming a Good Capitalist in the field he's passionate in probably sounds appealing.

tbh i feel like this is gonna bomb, I really don't think he has the chops to run a publishing company and his intro video alone sets off a bunch of flags

also what I dont get is why a publishing company specifically? and why announce it with no games to show or any things to lead up to? why not a funding program or grants system, and have people apply for funding? its very 'ideas guy'

i give it a year or two before we hear a bunch of stories about dodgy contracts and shitty oversight from the company before it fades away

the 'point' of a publisher is multifaceted, and ranges from everything from funding to advertising to contract negotiation with platforms and larger marketplaces (getting your game on game pass, getting it to be part of deals and getting your game in front of people at the appropriate times to maximise engagement and entice people to your game)

don't get me wrong, I think if he throws himself behind a project that project is immediately going to get a lot more attention no question, but I just don't see it going beyond that? and given his video essays into game design in the past have been super surface level, i also just don't see him being able to contribute something to the process that gives me confidence that this is going to churn out some great stuff. Happy to be proven wrong, but as someone in this space the fact that he's straight up announcing himself opening this up without anything on the offering plate feels a lot like folks who tweet and make videos saying 'i'm going to build the biggest, best game because I'm a GamerTM and therefore I should know the best things to put in one', of which there are dozens of failed kickstarters to point at for examples - because it's easier to build hype around an idea than it is to actually deliver

Isn’t the entire point of publishing to bring attention to a product

I mean yeah, but which projects will you be bringing attention to? He has enough clout to promote games and at least he's being transparent about him becoming a shill for hire, but if he expects to just trudge through his inbox and find the next indie game darling it's like, lol. Like if that was a viable business model, publishers would all be trudging through the sea of half-baked itch.io projects.

ok this is really negative but yeah i see it. i like dunkey so hopefully it succeeds but i wouldn't be shocked if what you said comes true.

Judging by the fact that dunkey hates reading long lines of dialogue and admits to not understanding rpg games, I doubt the man has enough of an attention span to even read legal documents for publishing

that's what lawyers are for. he'll just sit on a big pile of cash. It's not like he makes the merch at his merch store.

He played and enjoyed story-driven games like RDR, TLOU, Death Stranding, Yakuza and many more just fine. His problem was always about the anime tropes in the vast majority of JRPGs that doesn't suit his sensibilities and slow-paced, repetitive turn-based combat - he still enjoy turn-based stuff when it is fun like Persona 5 and Into the Breach for example :shrug-outta-hecks:

He never really states it but he seems to hate the fanservice and objectification common in JRPGs, like I think that was the primary reason why he hates Xenoblade.

        Which is cool honestly.

like I think that was the primary reason why he hates Xenoblade.

People got the impression he liked Xenoblade 3 considering he clearly beat it, and that game dials back really hard on the anime tropes 2 had (and 1 lacked), so yeah I think thats it.

When he was listing all the genres of games he plays, what game flashed on screen when he said "RPGs?" That'll tell you all you need to know.

i don't know how possible it is to guess a person's diligence with real life stuff based on what games they like. I've played some jrpgs for hundreds of hours and the one time I had to draw up a contract it took like a month to get through 7 pages.

This shit kinda sucks. "I play a lot of games and therefore will only publish good games" yeah okay.

It's kinda fucked up to make your publisher pitch video have a background of a bunch of games you had NOTHING TO DO WITH.

I truly can't wait to see how much of a baby he is when people don't like a game he publishes.

You know the real problem with video games? Not a single dev plays videogames in their free time. Not one.

lets talk about what some indie devs actually think of this since half this thread is soyfacing over dunkey:

grace bruxner reacting to dunkey randomly calling her game spam: https://twitter.com/gracebruxner/status/1572813343135440896

      mixolumia dev: https://twitter.com/davemakes/status/1572749041360056320

the dunkey fans have found the developer of grapple dog: https://twitter.com/JoGribbin/status/1572776528987000834

I cannot stress enough that THESE ARE THE DEVELOPERS HE IS PITCHING TO. He isn't pitching to Supergiant (Hades devs)! He isn't pitching to Extremely OK Games (Celeste)! He made a video that kinda just pisses off the people making the unnoticed great games.

Guy is gonna be disappointed when he finds out that the kind of games he wants to publish already have their publisher. His website is going to be bombarded by the desperate developers, the one making "weak games".

Of all :gamer-gulag: I would expect dunkey to not fuck anyone over, but I do feel like this comes down more to how my man does with spreadsheets and not how based he is, unfortunately.

even small indie projects are hugely expensive ventures. he can't offer the first - even the most successful crowdfunding campaigns can barely cover a single indie game, let alone a publishing company - and he can merely offer his own platform and credibility for the second. i think dunkey wants to promote whatever lands on his inbox and get a cut, really. which is weird because he mentioned he already has a lot of spam requests to plug their indie games? so he expects to suddenly find something good now that he's a publishing company? i dunno, the world wonders.

          Yes?

Has dunkey ever made a inflammatory and outsized statement that isnt meant to be taken at face value? Like theres an entire running joke about Knack being “the best game of all time” that is obviously a joke

What gamer personality ventures like this have actually succeeded?

I remember Criken was involved in making/marketing a twitch base horror game for a while but that collapsed.

Criken's company is the one that helped Jerma do the dollhouse stream, I think they are still plugging along making twitch integration games.

Yeah I remember him talking about it in the behind the scenes for the Jerma Dollhouse, maybe it's just because I haven't followed Criken in a while that it seems like there's less going on

Dunkey doesn’t seem to understand nor do I believe he has enough funds to manage something on this level with the vision of content he wants to produce

These youtubers have more money than god and they don't like to talk about it. MoistKritikal just admitted to losing 100,000+ per month on his vanity project e-sports organization.

He's in an position to exert a ridiculous amount of leverage over perspective partners that is for sure. He could offer them crap contracts and just be like "I'm the Dunkey it will get a trillion views" and that's kind of an enticing option when you have no publicity.
