Unlike other posters who make this thread, online takes are cool here, but bonus points for IRL stuff.

I was drinking with a coworker last night and somehow communism and the USSR came up. They went on about the Holodomer, implying it was engineered and targeted. I explained "hey you're literally repeating nazi talking points" and I dont recall the rest of the conversation, but im happy I got to defend Stalin at a work gathering.

Not the worst thing I've heard all week I don't think, but its both IRL and fresh in my brain.

I'm normally not one to stan the Roman empire, but they had some fairly interesting ideas about what to do with uppity Christians.

Like when my roommate (a white suburban "Buddhist") claimed that the the PRC killed literally everyone in Tibet. The response when I asked where the bodies were?

      "They burned them"

Said with such matter-of-fact conviction, like how could I not know this obvious fact?

Conversation… Woman: I would have an abortion if the fetus had any disabilities because I’ve seen how horribly that can effect a family.

Man: I would want to keep and love my child, because I’m not an ableist, but I do think women only get one abortion in their life and then that’s it, next one you gotta pop out.

    Fuckkkkkkk

This season is fucking awful. I hope all of them never have children. Expect the guy with the Israeli woman. He seems like a gem. I blame the show for casting in Dallas.

On the US embassy publicly warning about a potential terrorist attack in South Africa without communicating with South African authorities beforehand, Source:

Surely if US intelligence receives info about an impending terrorist attack it has a duty to warn its citizens.

Imagine the fall out if they had kept quiet and a US citizen was killed, or if anyone was killed and it came to light that the US knew but said nothing.

Also how many mass shooters are on wanted lists or known to police?

When the US is the first to warn of an impending terrorist attack, it reads as "don't come to school tomorrow"

Heard this one through a friend who had been arguing with a non-mutual friend over if former colonial powers should pay reparations:

"Colonial exploitation was okay, and the Brits and French WERE going to give the colonies some development in return, but the UN bullied them into granting independence before they got to do it"

I read an article citing some westoid military intelligence expert who by the way has predicted immediate Russian defeat since the beginning of the war. This war was about Russian casualties and some main takeaways were:

    • Ukrainian claims about Russian casualties might be a little exaggerates but they are not that much off
    • Russia is taking heavy casualties now, unlike Ukraine
    • Russian industry lacks key components for war production while western industry has near-unlimited capacity.
    • Iranian drones prove how desperate and just about to collapse Russia is
    • Unlike westerners, Russians doesn't care about human lives and just leaves their wounded behind

The man claiming all this used to work in the actual military intelligence agency before he cashed out and got a job in a think tank. I can't divine whether he is this delusional or whether it's cynical propaganda.

Was told by millenial STEM-brained coworkers that most degrees are worthless, and that it’s eighteen year-olds’ faults for taking out expensive loans to go to college. They haven’t been on the job hunt for a decade, and I told them that most jobs won’t even look at you without a degree. People don’t have a choice.

They doubled down and said that the 4-5 years someone spends in college is wasted, that spending 4-5 years working a blue-collar job out of high school will get you six-figures vs studying History or Music.

The fucking irony of credentialed, limp-wristed office gusanos claiming that nobody should go to school for a useless degree and instead studying something “useful” like engineering. They’re not even working lucrative engineering jobs and they think MORE people should study it and crowd the job market.

From knowing several of these people, there's no logical thinking going on there, they're just patting themselves on the back for having made the "right" decision. Most comp sci people seem to think everyone should go into comp sci because that's where the big money is, and when you bring up that this would drive down labour prices, their brains short circuit because they have literally never thought of the labour market in that way.

Today my kid showed me a TikTok made by my country's psychotic libertarian party. The aesthetics and production quality made it look like something made by a 6th grader but this was made by a real political party with seats in parliament. The TikTok have the following reasons to vote for the psychotic liberal party:

    1. Lower taxes = you get more money
    2. Abolishing var taxes so everyone can get a cool car
    3. The chairman of the psychotic libertarian party becomes prime minister. (And he is "Daddy").

The psychotic libertarian party is doing very well with young voters and stand to gain a lot of seats at the upcoming election, in no small part due to their meme-based social media campaigning.
