Private schools should be illegal, but barring that giving them state funds is just a roundabout way to kill public education. The right wing's war on public education is truly something to behold. They have made tremendous strides and yet we hear nothing about it outside of educator's circles and the odd news article like this one.

There is no institution in America whose primary aim isn’t to shake every last cent out of your pockets

I started a new job last year here in Canada where part of my duties involve handling certain regulatory issues for our US branches. I've been doing work like this for 10+ years domestically. But holy cow, the rent-seeking American bureaucracies are driving me crazy. No wonder a certain group of Americans distrusts the entire concept of government. The only ones they've ever known, typically via privatised rent-seeking bureacracies, are all trying to soak them.

It’s also fueled by racism, some white people will do anything to keep their children away from brown people.

I remember in a Blowback episode George HW Bush was the Darth Vader of privatization (of the military).

Underfund thing -> it underperforms -> people get mad -> private option sounds good -> private option sells your organs

It sucks that this strategy seems to be working, and that libs seem to keep getting blindsided by it. Even though right-wingers explicitly, loudly talk about how their end goal is to eliminate public school entirely and have taxpayer-funded private christian schools as the primary educational institutes.

Buying a whole sea change of public opinion for 9 cents of candy is hilariously discouraging. We live on a clown world.

In Texas they either now allow or are going to allow private schools to take public funds. I don’t see how public education can even survive that.

I’ve only interacted with FWISD so I haven’t really seen it first had yet but I mean it’s the most blatant attack on the individual I’ve ever seen in my life I think. Like from now on you can guarantee your children will be less educated than yourself. It makes me sick and I don’t know what to do other than stuff that we shouldn’t talk about in open coms.

Historically, communist revolutions have occurred in countries with extremely low literacy rates. Once education becomes something only the bourgeoisie have access too, and is no longer being used as a means of pacifying the working class, the proletariat can "feel out" the contradictions in the system much more clearly, even if they would lack the means of articulating it all fully.
