This may be the single stupidest event in my lifetime and I was a kid during the insanity that followed 9/11 so that's saying something

In fairness, 9/11 had a body count in the thousands. This is over a fucking balloon, all while there are 2-3 crises going on in the country the media doesn't care to report on.

This guy lives in a fantasy world where every single thing the government does is decided by brain geniuses looking at cost-benefit models. The much more simple explanation that the government either wanted to shoot it down but couldn't until it drifted lower, or that the response wasn't coherent at all with some people wanting to shoot and others preventing them.

Maybe it was intentionally left alone because of the propaganda value, but honestly even giving them that much credit is a stretch IMO.

this whole thing is fucking amazing… like the military scrambling to move their “secret” shit out of sight as if there arent multiple satellite passes every day. Makes no goddamn sense.

The best part are Redditors saying, "This Balloon isn't that big of a threat but TikTok? That's the real threat.

when asked why they're more afraid of tiktok than the NSA/FBI/or even local cops, they say shit like "in the US, companies have the CHOICE to sell your data to the government. In China, they're forced to!"

Funniest part about Reddit hating Tiktok is that most of their hate is probably more to do with that fact that it's mainstream and popular amongst social outgoing people than the fact that it's Chinese

Obviously, by it's popularity and growth rate even in the US, even sinophobic non-redditors don't care

You hate TikTok because you're sinophobic. I hate TikTok because I know my ADHD brain will be instantly addicted to infinite algorithmic dopamine if I use it. We are not the same.

Environmental disaster from a weather balloon falling to earth like that doesn't happen all the time.

Lol, how much power would it need to send a signal outside US borders? I'm not sure the solar panels would be enough.

This wouldn't be an issue, it could easily make use of a satellite uplink, and the curvature of the earth is a more limiting factor for a transmission than transmission power in most cases (unless they're running a 4K livestream or something, but even then, other problems get in your way before power)

The US isn't heartless (unlike those dastardly Chinese)

They had to make sure those wicked reds didn't have tiny children piloting the thing from the inside.
