So all the kids nowadays are addicted to social media but their parents aren't
Imagine how fucked up the kids will be when their parents were also addicted to social media when they were younger
Then imagine how fucked up THEIR kids will be when their parents grew up thinking social media addiction was normal
My parents are far more addicted to social media than I am, what's weird is that they weren't like that when I was growing up.
Boomers have been addicted to social media since Facebook.
They will be able to type fast on their phone, but when it comes to computer they’ll be using their pointer fingers and won’t know how to ctrl + c and ctrl + v
Makes a great reason to import more foreign tech workers.
I've noticed many parents wearing airpods while out with their kids. At parks, walking down the street, etc.
Maybe they're not listening to anything and just have them in anyway?
As our attention gets more and more fractured and distracted I feel like the people this will hurt most is children as the time they get with their parents becomes diluted even further :(
The social skills of GenZ and further are going to be maldeveloped, but that's probably unavoidable now.
After all, encasing people in bubbles of consoom is profitable
thats criminal. the same people probably complain abt how their parents never spent time with them. then they turn around and treat their own kids like dogs, taking them on walks while listening to music/podcasts. INTERACT WITH THE PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE, ESPECIALLY YOUR OWN CHILDREN
My parents were aggressively addicted to TV and the approval of other suburbanites. It can't be that different to our childhood in that regard.
It'll be the same as the TV generation. Same amount of brain worms between those that make an effort to not let it dictate their lives and those that didn't. I remember seeing millennials that were shoved in front of the TV all day by their boomer/Gen X parents. Their social skills were shit too.

Hey, it's me!
I don't know. Parents have always had ways of checking out around the kids, I don't know how much of an effect it'll have except in like the over the top cases
If gen z is any indication, I wouldn't count on it.
Gen z is less tech savvy than millennials on average (except for video/photos). They're more up on trends but that's different from actually being able to troubleshoot tech issues or media literacy
idk how much of this is actual generational differences or ur lack of exposure to gen z. a lot of my friends, like me, are computer obsessed and can figure out anything computer-related. but, like every generation, the average zoomer doesnt even know how to access BIOS or open the command prompt
I've taught in high schools or colleges for about twelve years. I've noticed student's tech literacy declining from when I started.
Most people in every gen aren't good at computers. Some of every gen are great with them. I'm speaking of averages.
I think there's a material reason for this change. Technology has become slicker, less janky and more touch screen based.
Of course, we're both speaking in anecdotes, I'd be curious to look at actual research.
yeah i can see that. each innovation further abstracts the electronics behind the screen. i love living in a skinner-box-based society!
tech literacy is important but comp sci and related fields are crazy oversaturated. literally half my uni's college of science was comp sci. we dont need all these computer experts, but lack of tech literacy causes the mass mystification of these technologies which leads to trends like the current glorification of AI and cryptocurrency
but yeah, it would be interesting to see research on how significant this trend is
good points. there does seem to be a general trend of young people being pushed less toward STEM and more towards being dancing monkeys for the STEMlords. i cant wait for nerd gulags filled with PMC techbros if we ever get there
us gen z are pretty tech-addicted, but none of us were ipad babies. im sure children who have interacted almost exclusively with screens since infancy will not be ok
also, gen x/millenials (most parents of gen alpha) are definitely addicted to social media. so are boomers. everyone is. i know a lot of zoomers who have completely sworn off social media
edit: and its different from TV (also bad tho) since these devices are mini slot machines that are much more effective at addicting us and destroying our attention spans than mobies and TV
Today in the US, most boomers thru Z are addicted to social media. The tech companies got all of us. This is already happening
Yeah, hard to say. I don't have a cell phone, and focus on spending time with my kids in a variety of settings, but I'm just one influence in their lives. The complete integration of technology into every minute of the day can't be that great for your brain.
There is an advantage is that nothing can really replicate the feeling of people in your life that you talk to and hug and they care about you and you care about them. I just try to expose them to that as often as possible and hope to win the dopamine turf battle.
I guess I'd recommend that approach for anyone, just talk to kids, be empathetic, listen, and have fun.
extremely pot and kettle of me to say but they're all gonna need ritalin by the time they're adults cuz with all that screentime they gotta have the attention spans of goldfish by now
