I am a fairly experienced distance runner, and much of what you say is legitimate. Besides that, the striking of the foot is also important as well. Preferably, striking in the mid-foot not only ensures the preservation of balance, but also helps to lengthen your stride without overextending (although preferences tend to vary, but the forefront is more so for sprinting while the heel can lead to shin strains if overdone). Otherwise, it's never too late to start running, especially if done at your own pace. Once you know where to start, the progress can only go up with patience and dedication.

maybe this is bad advice but the thing i love about running is you can just do it. there's so little you need to go for a run, good shoes, I'd recommend some nice shorts but thats it. As long as you're out there enjoying yourself its very hard to fuck up

You're gonna do way better going nice and slow than trying to have any sort of pace. Even if you feel like you're barely going faster than walking at first (and don't feel bad about having walk breaks if you can't keep running the whole time). You'll do way better (and hate it way less) if you're doing comfortable easy runs more frequently and increasing the distance slowly and steadily, rather than trying for anything heroic. You'll also injure yourself way less. The problem with running is that the crappy bits are front-loaded, but it will get easier surprisingly quickly if you stick with it.

Just a heads up, games will help with the boredom, but will probably not help with life feeling meaningless. Sadly only doing stuff IRL seems to work

I've been getting really into Monster Hunter World and Crusader Kings III just came out

I have switched to playing games with no plot or anything I have to listen to, so that I can listen to podcasts/videos etc. I'm at the point where I can't bring myself to play anything that I have to involve myself in.

A long time ago when I was really depressed I couldn't play anything, I remember just staring at Digg or something. That sucked.

If you can you should listen to stuff with headphones outside. Hope you aren't on the US west coast.

when i was depressed i used to play only grand strategy and only because it made time feel less slow like that and enter the gungeon mindless games where you just do a thing a lot of times

At the beginning of quarantine, this was how I got through the first dozen or so episodes of TrueAnon. Minecraft, Liz, and Brace. Can't go wrong, until you tunnel into lava because you had your game sounds turned down.

Crusader Kings 3. I just converted the entire Iberian peninsula to Islam and waged a holy war against France. Is fun.

Fuck Dota, honestly. Lost years of my life. I know it was my own personal and mental issues, glad I started to deal with them and stopped playing games. I feel so much better and have more motivation to work on my music and actually care for myself and chores.

I kinda fell of when I reached Driftwood but up to there it was super fun. It took me a long time to get there because I did a bunch of sidequests and explored everything on the first island. Where can I go next if I want to do a bunch of combat encounters? I know the writing is good but combat is the most fun part for me.

Thanks for the tip! I kinda got overwhelmed and bounced off but I want to continue playing because it's awesome.

Try Disco Elysium. It has some of the best writing in video games to date.

There’s a reason why everyone from Time to PC Gamer call it one of the best games ever made.

Plus almost the entire supporting cast of characters are voiced by the Chapos

    Have you thought about:

Learning how to make art? Make Music? Learn more history about a topic you're interested in? I have been feeling the same way a lot lately. Just find something that you find interesting and dive in, we're fortunate enough that a lot of this info is out on the net for free.

Last game that super hooked me was Outer Wilds, just pure contemplative exploration in a free flight solar system.

Seconding some exercise though, even just walks are nice for getting out and just doing nothing for a bit

Reducing my amount of pure distraction intake has been super helpful for me. Less video games, more personal projects, music stuff, I started reading again and I'm getting better at it.

I love doing computer stuff, but so much of it is designed to make your brain mush and get you addicted. If you really want to use your computer, find actual creative pursuits that can make your computer useful as a tool rather than an entertainment box.

It's pretty surprising what you can accomplish with a cheap recording interface, either Cakewalk or Reaper, some free VST synths, and a $30 MIDI keyboard controller.

Hell, if you want to go really crazy, make your own MIDI keyboard. a 5 dollar arduino, some wire, buttons or an old digital typewriter, and online tutorials can make you something decent.

Instead of getting disillusioned after seeing the smoke and mirrors, I wound up getting more interested with the creativity, art, and theater that go into making a game believable. They're a really unique and cool medium with unfortunate baggage :/

Get a $50 USB drawing tablet and see if there's any "art by numbers" drawing lessons or something.
