And the grifters and griftees are so convinced about it that it's being badly applied everywhere because it has the vague promise of taking humans out of the equation for some jobs. It can't, but that isn't going to stop capitalists from trying and making our lives downright miserable

It might, journalists trapped in SEO-optimization hell are already getting replaced by machines that can pump out incoherent tutorials and listicles for pennies. And the more incorrect the better since it means more ad revenue when people return to the article thinking they did something wrong.

A bunch of insufferable computer touchers spent their retirement savings on massively overpriced nvidia chips and are desperate to find a way to profit from them. If mining buttcoin isn't going to do it, at least they can flood every search query with jibberish results interspersed with ads.

welll general purpose AI is just a bad idea

machine learning is a great tool for some tasks and needs to be custom designed for each specialised task

in large part this is because as a trope AI characters in stories are just people and this is because they are written by writers who view them as characters. Data is a person because he is written as a person

Machine learning is AI though. General purpose AI is a pipe dream, unless you're talking about foundation models being general purpose.

yeah machine learing is AI but inteligence in the context of computer science refers to the ability to carry out complex tasks. Nothing less nothing more

it can't think it can't feel that's the artificial part

There are tons of AI models for carrying out complex tasks (assuming you have a physical interface for the model), and there is already a lot of research going into building foundation models specifically for reinforcement learning.

They've always been this way, it's just leaking out of the tech world now. I remember when everything had to be gamified, mobile, social, big data, cloud, AR, internet of things, VR, crypto, and now AI. Of those, only mobile and cloud ever went anywhere (social hype was after Facebook already won), some produced some nice leftover toys for hobbyists, some accomplished and meant nothing, and crypto has the dubious distinction of providing literal negative value.

They think it's whatever you want it to be. It's grifts and speculation all the way down. It's jingling keys in front of moronic investors. I have no idea how many of them genuinely believe the bullshit they're peddling.

If there's one thing I learned about the "business world", it's that investors are the dumbest, most gullible people in the world who will believe the most insane shit imaginable if you promise that it'll make infinite money. You could probably make millions by promising Theranos 2 and saying "it's different now cause we have AI". I'm not even joking.

It's complete insanity, it's one big casino and completely removed from reality.

It's a cargo cult, they've seen a glimpse of the new god's face and now everyone is building effigies and landing strips, filling the blanks from the thrash it left behind when it first landed mixed with their prayers and dreams

Unfortunately this cargo plane never left

As much as I loathe to give modern AI too much credit, I do find the detractors yelling "It's not intelligence, it doesn't think!" to be rather funny given that folks like these are not exactly outliers. data-laughing

No joke - the massive level of hype and bewilderment with AI has mostly just lowered my estimation of what's going on in other people's heads. Seeing the crap that ChatGPT spits out and redditors

        soypoint-1 soypoint-2

over it somehow makes me think even worse of redditors.

These is the key diference. They manipulate ideas while llms cslculate the next most likley token. Not that we dont do that somtimes too. But its hard to se how the ai has a map otf how ts world works that even al aninals have

There's a distinction between Intelligence and Consciousness and honestly I do think LLMs are 'Intelligent' enough based off the process they use. They get things wrong, but you wouldn't call humans 'unintelligent' for getting things wrong either. That doesn't mean it's anywhere close to being an AGI either, just that I think the bar for 'intelligence' isn't that high and I think at least more advanced models are approaching or are at intelligence.

As time goes on I am inclined to think that AI (or at least the AI we currently have) is not going to lead to dramatic changes. Because it sources every query it makes from human knowledge, and increasingly, the stupid people win out so AI is going to source stupid answers and solutions.

If it isn't able to discern information, how is going to change how Tesla makes it's cars if it heavily samples design cues from, say, Elon's fanboys? It is going create a mockery rather than a superior product.

Garbage man is garbage: news at 11.

More seriously, LLMs are moderately useful when I have to write a blog post for work or an email to a new client. I give ChatGPT the gist and it spits out something somewhat plausible which I can edit into a coherent piece of text. It's not automated and it's not high quality but it saves me a bit of time. I'd never ask it questions or to write something I wasn't going to fix myself - it lies and it exaggerates and it just gets too much shit wrong.

Image generators like Midjourney and Stable Diffusion are cool, but I don't think they're at the "artists are dead" phase that neck beards on the internet think they are.

I imagine AI fashion would be augmented reality stuff. Like a TikTok filter that makes it look like you’re wearing an outfit.

There are already businesses that sell virtual clothes for influencers to use in their photoshoots.

These people are victims of their own propaganda, the only reason they call llms ai is to:

    1. Hedge agnist where regulations will focus as llms get developed, just another way to avoid paying people.

    2. It's pr to generate hype and it sort of works because they are victims of their own captlist news cycle which is kinda funny. It's like coming up with brando its what plants crave and then believing it your self.

"AI Fashion" you mean the most overdesigned crumpled-origami free-to-play MMO armor that could never be put on an actual model in part because it isn't shaped like a human body? That's the fashion of the future? From the guy that attended the Met Gala in a 1920s-style tux?

Let's not demean White Tie outfits (which aren't Tuxedos and are still current attire...for (generally state) events that are more formal than the Met Gala, which is a semi-formal event) with whatever the fuck Musk was wearing there.
