It's missing the blimp right above the tower that says "websites based off subreddits based off podcasts"
imagine thinking Harry Potter, a children's book series about magical blood quantum, is higher culture than Grand Theft Auto, an interactive media series which normalizes shooting rocket launchers at cop helicopters
ETA: the absolute CLOWNERY of ranking "Emily Dickenson poem" towards the very top and "Taylor Swift" towards the bottom, as if Swift's discography isn't full of at least as much cinematic, inventive, over-the-top lesbian yearning as Dickenson's oeuvre, if not more
A single Emily Dickinson poem is higher culture than the entirety of Miles Davis. I'm sorry, that's just how culture works.
Ok who told the STEM people it was ok for them to have opinions about art.
(To my numbers inclined comrades: I'm just kidding)
Also the only bideogame on the chart. I guess the others ended up being either too high or too low.
The only time they heard video games mentioned in their life was during the whole hot coffee debacle
I'm not going to speak up for any of the other titles in the series, but San Andreas was an absolute masterpiece and one of the finest works of interactive media ever produced.
This reminds me of an episode of Radio War Nerd where they got into a discussion about "high culture." Specifically, they were comparing Disney and Looney Toons. According to Gary Breecher, Disney always had ambitions to produce works of high culture, and often times failed despite making a concerted effort, while something like Bugs Bunny doing Wagner as a bit was the pinnacle of high culture.
Duck Amuck is the apex fusion of low culture, high culture, art, and subversive media. I will not be taking questions.
Honestly, including a rag like the NYT as "high culture" just because your stupid Tribeca brunch club all read it really highlights how the high vs. low culture divide is completely based on classist consumer signaling rather than any sort of actual merit or achievement.
"Zootopia" is exactly where it belongs.
However there is a noticeable absence on this chart of "wanting to fuck the Zootopia bunny cop", which should be at the top of the antenna.
tfw the highest level culture in western society is 300 year old entertainment aimed at normal people
Like, Shakespeare wasn't some pretentious artist, and you really don't need 200IQ to enjoy HamletSo to be fair to the book, it's more making a point that this is how people classify cultural stimuli in a personal level. The question says that the example is arbitrary and calls for the reader to make their own, point out issues, and discuss who makes these arbitrary determinations.
Also judging by how a lot of the comments here are actually trying to "fix" the arrangement it's not wrong about how we mentally classify things lol.
Given the label the diagram is clearly meant to point out the ridiculousness of classifying culture in high, middle, and low-brow categories, and asking the student to question who are the gatekeepers of culture and why.
They put Modern Family, The Walking Dead and The Big Bang Theory over the man who made Late Registration, 808s, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Yeezus? 🤡
