AI could be such a neat, useful thing. But nope, capitalists can't help themselves. Gotta use it to grift the internet with low quality content and steal from artists.
One day I ask Chat GPT what Ray Liotta's line from Goodfellas would be if he was made of goo, and it gives me "As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a goo monster that would swallow my enemies; a gangster of slime" and it's hilarious.
The next, a bunch of copywriters are out of a job, academic papers have the rodent equivalent of the Sandy Cheeks picture, my dad is asking "the AI" for help wiring a high voltage circuit, and all of Facebook is a content trough delivering absolutely deranged images of Christ on a cross made of cheeseburgers to lead poisoned 70 year olds.
absolutely deranged images of Christ on a cross made of cheeseburgers to lead poisoned 70 year olds.
One of those images will become sentient and nuke us. A Gangster Spongebob on the cross with a giant dick will be the last thing many people see.
I Have No Mouth and I Must Generate Images of Nude Gangster SpongeBob Being Crucified
I want a remake of the 80s blob movie but have Joe Pesci do the voice of the blob as it melts people
Explaining Hard Takeoff to Americans "Imagine telling an AI to make burgers."
It 100% was a conspiracy of a bunch of tech dweebs speaking to private equity and investment firms for mega funding+ crypto vermin that all deserve the worst punishment imaginable
I mean the "funny" part of AI is funny for all of like 5 minutes and then it gets boring as hell.
even on reddit with all the techbros any posting of chat-gpt output, even when it would be funny and is relevant to the conversation just gets searing hate from everyone
anywhere someone even gets a whiff of it, no matter how shitty and chuddy the comments, is just nonstop dunking
excluding places where AI is actually discussed. but those places seem to be shitty and toxic now. like go to the various AI music subreddits it's just full of shitty people. nobody is having fun
they probably shouldn't have gone gung-ho on the "we're going to replace all your jobs and push you into ghettos to meticulously bomb with AI integrated drones until we genocide all but techbro billionaires and their retainers".
I think if techbros didn't immediately start showering everyone with AI art (and companies didn't begin using AI art so soon), then AI's positive PR would have lasted longer.
Unfortunately, they blew the gasket too soon and now everyone sees it for what it is.
yeah. a certain reckless eagerness to basically force feed everyone this slop
it's because the sheer excitement at the thought of wiping out the entire workforce was just too much to bear.
Some technro telling you to marvel at some eldritch man creature with a sagging smile and nineteen fingers probably doesn't help the cause.
Nor when you are some 20 or 30-something with a passing tech literacy and you keep seeing Meemaw post AI shit on Facebook saying "wow what a miracle" and it's a picture of corn with Jesus's face carrying a wounded marine.
It's also a pandora's box of burning up even more fossil fuels to fuel the deluge of cheap crap it creates. It's harrowing to think for like one neat ai thing, there's 500 million shitty ones and hectares of the amazon burnt down.
It's the next NFT scam. Capitalists are trying to create new frontiers to exploit. It's really amazing how useless this system is for society.
To be fair to AI, AI art and the like actually create some sort of products for investors even if they all suck and are grifts. NFTs are just a basic denial of reality lathed into existence by the uber-rich.
Entrusting environmental progress to free market means just meant that we have crypto NFTs and LLMs burning so much extra fossil fuels it's akin to a new first world country springing up out of nowhere, but also you can overpay for water in cans now.
I want the bubble to burst, but it seems like companies can get away with being fraudulent forever now.
Tesla was a fake ass company built on hype for so long. There was several years it was worth more than all the other automakers combined, despite being incredibly unprofitable. Yet Elon was able to keep boosting one scam after another until it was a real(but significantly smaller than promised) company. He was going to build a $35k electric car years ago, going to have a fully automated factory, going to have 1 million robotaxis on the road in 2018, going to launch an insurance company, and many more promises. Each time the company was desperate to raise cash, he gave a presentation with big promises, and all the dipshit venture capital firms lapped it up.
AI is a perfect grift, too. It's really easy to trick people into thinking something is intelligent, you just need to make it produce human like output from real human input that you steal.
I love how desperate the industry is to prove use-value for its useless thing. There was an interview recently with the company that makes the mattresses for the Olympic athletes. They spent a good 10 minutes talking about their advanced AI bed which revolutionises sleep. It will take your height, weight, and body shape and then tell you how to flip your mattress segments so that it's firmer or softer. This innovation is so staggering that I almost forgot my grandparents had a bed from the 1970s-80s that did the same thing with a remote control. It worked better and had more settings, much in the way that my debit card is infinitely better than any crypto shit.
I refuse to take any AI goober seriously. They're absolute scumfuckers who only exist to reinvent the wheel as a scam.
It's quite hilarious, because they think the problem is intelligence but in reality the problem is robotics. They're completely convinced their email jobs are the material foundation of wealth.
They'll be useless hallucinating ghosts in a jar until you can hook it up to a thing that does actual shit.
If you try to arrange the bed pieces to the Sex Configuration it will take all night and you won't be able to have sex, kinda like when you scatter grains of rice in front of a vampire and he has to sit there and count them until the sun comes up.
I think it's funny that the imperial core latched onto AI because a machine that produces ordered garbage is seen as more profitable than paying workers a fair livable wage.
No better representation of the dysfunction of the American tech industry than people worshipping generative text that is slowly killing our planet.
The collapse is coming, and soon. Have no doubt about it.
My CEO issued a press release about how last quarter had a 50% increase in earnings per share and unironically paid someone in PR to come up with copy saying we need to do it again. This company measures revenue in tens of billions.
I am serious, all corporations have lost their fucking minds. Every regional manager I know is doing 3 jobs because backfilling positions has been banned for years.
The collapse is coming, friend. And fascists are preparing too, whether you (speaking to all leftists) do it or not.
Stay armed.
Honestly in the past few months when I've started use it more as a search engine it's progressively getting worse and worse.
I think this is exactly what is happening. In the beginning it was pretty shit. Got some more information in their and turned into pretty good, but that tip is fine because it’s just totally system overload.
Hallucinations aka rampant is real. With that said, it is great for finding the word for something I can only sort of describe and to just screw around with. I already don't pay for art. Who cares if I ask a robot to draw Steve Harvey jumping off of the top rop onto a rudo scoobie doo.
Also Capitalism trying to shoehorn AI into every product possible. Why does my work software need an AI built in? It won't help us employees or the company, what would help is to fuck off with the 'do more with less' and pay us more. But no, someone somewhere got paid to add a worthless implementation of AI to our software.
this is my new favorite tech related blogpost since Programming Sucks, possibly ever, thank you
Shit. It’s only gotten worse since this was posted
The consequences of a non-organized left that isn’t routinely blowing up data centers across the country
Then you get co-opted by into a Metal Gear Solid 2 Dead Cell (aka Gladio 2: Americans Too!)
But no, someone somewhere got paid to add a worthless implementation of AI to our software.
tag yourself, I'm someone :yea: mea culpa
half the engineers (myself included) said "this is stupid and worthless" and product said "it adds :stonks-up: value so we have to" and so even more labor was sacrificed to The Line Which Must Always Go Up. and yet no one ever gets on board when i start talking about unionizing smh
when the ai craze was just starting it was just a few websites with mostly free access that would do cool stuff. now it's a paywalled product regurgitated to hell in dozens of different websites, all of which are getting progressively worse because they have ran out of "cheap" data and now they are training on their own output.
not to mention they have ruined all forms of social media with unimaginable levels of spam generation and cursed images, their massive carbon footprint, the jobs that the c suites axed that couldn't be done with these products so now the burden is shifted to other workers etc etc. capital is getting dumber and dumber every day and it won't stop until it burries us all.
I remember when it was called Deep Dream and it just turned photos into versions where everything is made out of dogs
Ive played with ChatGPT dozens of times. I’ve actually used AI maybe a handful of times. Usually for trying to gussie up a bid for some plumbing work. It’s a mixed bag there. Sometimes I get some pretty good results, sometimes it sounds like exactly what it is- a halfway literate middle aged dumbass using AI to church up a bid. I’ve used the logo generator when playing around with ideas for work/business cards. That’s hit or miss also but in the cases I’m mostly using it in I’m not sure if it’s the tool or the idiot using the tool.
Frankly, im not artistic. I’m not a creative type so my uses for something like AI will probably always be based on things I interact with or put my hands on (does that make sense?) like looking up relevant specs in a technical manual for something I am currently servicing in the field, or looking up a part that’s on a boiler that was out of date when my grandpa was a toddler.
I guess AI really won’t be any different for me, than using a regular search engine already is. In my life as it is currently, I don’t have a use for AI.
I hate to say it, that just because I can’t find a use for it that it’s swill and should be 86’d, but I can’t find a use for it so it’s shit and should be put in the fkn garbage can.
I like to use it for summarising large texts. It's very effective at that.
I don't like using it for much else, occasionally if I have writers block for an announcement or something it's a good way to break through it but I almost never go with its suggestions but rather it helps me to outline something and then it's most reworded in a way that isn't absolute garbage because it only ever outputs corpo-speak.
Using it to summarize large blocks of text sounds like a really great use. I’ll have to remember that next time I’m trying to get thru something and just want the Cliff’s Notes.
Actually there was a writeup posted not too long ago by a researcher who compared his summary of a report to one made by chatgpt, and the gist of his writeup is that AI doesn't effectively summarize things, it just shortens them. Which makes sense when you consider that it doesn't actually understand any of what it's consuming. So beware that in those summaries you could end up with irrelevant information, false conclusions, and a lot of missing vital information. If it's not something super important that's fine but it's a big pitfall to be aware of.
AI doesn't effectively summarize things
100%, any time I've tested it on a text I know, I have been disappointed.
Ok that does make some sense. It doesn’t understand what portions of sentences/paragraphs are conveying something important because it’s not an actual brain so I suppose if I’m using it to summarize a jam recipe I’ll be okay but definitely don’t use it to summarize a molten salt reactor build.
I can easily see it getting confused by prioritizing the wrong information. "Use 2.5-3 cups of butter or 3 cups of margarine" getting cut down to "use 2.5-3 cups butter or margarine" and then you're fucked if you use 2.5 cups margarine, to use a silly example off the top of my head. But pretend it's a molten salt reactor instead.
Theres a big mod for Bannerlord that uses a lot of AI art. Its a bespoke fantasy setting so having their own art does elevate it. But, a part of me can't help but be sad when I look at AI pictures. They aren't profiting off of it so its fine I guess. I just feel like if more people had free time to do art we wouldn't need AI.
I am pretty chill with the AI dorky oblivion voices though, the whole game is already so uncanny.
I just feel like if more people had free time to do art we wouldn't need AI.
We could have ai doing the boring busywork while we make art, but instead we're doing the boring busywork while ai makes art.
If it makes you feel better I would hate it even if it weren’t used directly by corpos because it still steals from real artists and coders and devalues their labour in the public’s perception.
I wouldn't have much problem with it if it wasn't in this capitalist system. As an amateur artist I get the frustration from freelance & commission artists having their art scraped for training data which can in turn cut them out completely. I wish it could exist in an environment where "AI" could just be a fun toy to generate stories, or images, etc., but that's not where we are now. IP is a fuck but I'd support independent artists and their concerns over the blatant gross profit driven motivations behind the "AI" bubble
Respecting IP is when you become a paypig for adobe, Microsoft, and media companies.
Disrespecting IP is when those large companies steal from smaller fish who can't do shit about it.
In capitalism there's no winning either way with IP law. AI is allowed to pirate every book/newspaper in existence for training data, but you as a human have to pay hundreds of dollars to read academic papers and gain real knowledge. Or you can freely use an underpriced AI in it's "capture the market" stage of pricing/use to give me the simulacrum of knowledge.
If I wrote open source code on github, I wouldn't want Microsoft to use it to train anything, even if I'm okay with other people taking it to make useful open projects.
A friend of mine works marketing, so exactly the type of person who you'd think would love AI. While they do love aspects of it, they say that pretty much half their job now is just sifting through AI generated slop. And you can always tell, ChatGPT especially has a certain je ne sais quoi about the way it writes.
The worst part about it as far as capitalism fucking it up and using it in the worst way possible is that regarding art and content: they don't want a masterpiece, they just want something that's good enough. So even if a real artist or writer could do a much better job, they're going to pick whatever costs them the least and makes them the most.
ChatGPT especially has a certain je ne sais quoi about the way it writes
like a redditor lol
part of the samey style is that the closed off models like ChatGPT don't have temperature control, which is somewhere between randomness and creativity as a thingy. it's a self-defeating thing where the laziest people are using the LLMs, so they're also too lazy to get granular and set up one that won't be so obvious
When it started to gain traction I thought it would be cool to use for research (not as a replacement, but as a supplement). I wanted to hook it up to my pdf library, annotations and notes and use it to usefully search through for connections, etc.. I tried a few ways of doing this, and it just sucks. It's so bad that Ctrl+f in Zotero to search though pdfs for keywords is far better.
Or even as a deeper search mechanism for finding new papers. But it fucking sucks at this too. Just hallucinations upon hallucinations. Every library search engine which hasn't even been updated since 2003 does it better.
That aside, no one has been able to explain away the environmental costs for the world's shittiest blender either. We will destroy the world so a student can plagiarize easier, corporations can lay off more people, healthcare can get shittier, and so some fuck can trick it into making big booba anime girls after the thousandth query. What a destitute failure.
Like bitcoin, it's stupid, environmentally costly and is a (shit) solution looking for a problem. There is nothing about it which is "intelligent". Silicon Valley is a blight on the world.
