They were making jokes about things they thought were okay but wanted a shield for if they were called out
I can't think of anything more cringeworthy then his whole "rivalry" with T-Series and how YouTubers all rallied behind him. I put rivialry in quotes because T-Series didn't care at all about it and it was completely one sided.
So much of that shit just relied on a bunch of racism too. I feel like his fans were thrilled about being given an excuse to be crazy racist against Indian people and then be all "it's just a joke!"
