A barista giving you pretty much anything more than your order? That's not the worst sign in the world.
A simple, "Hey, I think you're pretty cool, you wanna hang out sometime?" will give you a pretty quick indication of how mutual the interest is.
Maybe deprioritize a coffee hangout, though :P
That's how my brother met his previous BF. Not really sure how they started hanging out outside of said coffee shop (might have been invited to some sort of party that included other coworkers and stuff?).
