There's an ongoing problem in Dubai of people being forced to work in shitty conditions after getting their passports taken away by employers. AFAIK there's been reports of human trafficking done this way in Dubai. There was that story a few years ago of a house keeper who jumped off a balcony to escape her captors, an abusive married couple who would beat her.
It is nowhere near the chattel slavery practiced in the US. It also isn't legal, even though it's an open secret ignored by authorities. Like black slaves in the US were legally not allowed to be taught literacy. Children were taken away from their parents and sold off to far away places.

North korea is difficult for liberals. On the one hand they are told they can express all their racism on them. So they get to have all the fun of being racist they need to while feeling morally superior. I think that part of the liberal psyche needs that release valve.
