There are a bunch of sicko neoliberals and insufferable redditors there, yes, but there are also some normal libs and a few comrades, and it seems like a good way to encourage lemmy generally to re-embrace leftism.

I've been using an alt to talk on there and it's honestly not that bad. It's a little bad, but not that bad. I think if we just try to patiently explain ourselves, we have a reasonable chance of reaching people and shifting the general political alignment.

Those of us who aren't up to dealing with ghouls (I am frequently included in this group) can just stay at home here and that's just fine.

Anyway, just an idea. I would appreciate feedback.

Sure, we're not really organized in that way though. I'm just here for fun.

I sorta think it's easier to reach people in person cause there's an existing relationship with some level of trust, but people can do both.

You should keep in mind the few the comrades are probably just other hex,ml,grad alts and not mainly world users.

Also their admin team like for example rooki are known reactionaries that push their view on everyone, so if you act too communist they will probably ban you, like how they purged the vegan mods

I think a better use of your time would be to get people to switch to other instances like zip, ee or db0 who are federated with us and we would be able to reach people more effectively from our hex accounts

Ive been seeing a lot of decently based comments coming from there but their politics sub is basically straight up state dept propaganda.

They banned me a while back for I dont even know why. Probably telling someone to go fuck themselves or something.

imagine being so small the state department doesn't even know you exist yet you voluntarily doggedly stick to their party line.

That's why it's good to try to patiently explain one's position, as cathartic as it is to curse at someone. My suggestion was to, in a certain sense, be minimally disruptive because the people involved would be following the instance rules, they'd just also be communists who are interested in persuading people.

Holding certain opinions is deemed inherently uncivil to them, you can try presenting them as sweet as apple pie but the fact you're presenting them at all is going to piss them off. Remember the thread some guy made after getting banned here?, there were plenty of people explaining their position but they just called us all crazy anyway.

Agitating on lemmy is a waste of time, these are not normal people, these are Redditors who took redditing so seriously they decided to go make an even worse version of reddit

They're reactionaries and bigots the whole lot of them, if there's any place on the internet we should be agitating on it's Tik Tok before it gets banned, tens of millions of people regularly liking leftist Tik Tok content that wouldn't be out of place here on Hexbear, and we're still obsessed with a couple hundred dipshit Redditors who regularly upvote pro-genocide and pro-neonazi content every single day

For over a year now I've maintained that outreach, agitating, federating, and in general educating has always been a lauded goal, but the problem is the quality of the people we're interacting with and the people on lemmy are barely worth a dunk thread let alone serious outreach

From my perspective it's like if someone kept pressing us to agitate on 4chan or some shit, it's such a profound waste of time and energy

You'd still be an outlier in that case, not representative of some positive general trend when it comes to a shithole like .world

There's been comrades who've found us thru 4chan, doesn't mean we should engage with 4chan

The problem is that most people on Hexbear dot net think they're too good for Tiktok lol. But you are 100% right. People who are serious about treating social media as a propaganda front should be on Tiktok because that's where people are plugged in.

And I'll admit I used to be one of those people, until I gave it a shot and came across TikToks with 1 million plus likes with tens of thousands of comments about anti-imperialism, anti-capitalism, anti-racism....it was like finding the internet of a parallel universe where western leftism was actually a thing, I couldn't believe it

Then the state decided to ban it and that was all the confirmation I needed, it's the real deal and our asses have been way too slow to recognize the potential it offers

Just search whatever you want. Treat the search like any other search engine. Engage with content you want to see. Like it, favorite it, repost it, comment, etc. Follow people who post content you like. The algorithm is pretty solid at feeding you what you want to see after that.

Start with Madeline Pendleton. She’s been eating shit from libs for talking about the DPRK for a while now. She’s also a coop worker and has a whole series breaking down the effects of capitalism on modern clothing production.

4chan is honestly easier because there's no upvotes/likes, so instead you get lots of (you)s/replies. And more replies means more people will look at whatever it is got so many replies, creating more replies. Like you can say something mildly left leaning and completely derail a reactionary discussion.

Like they'll be talking about how to kill single mothers or something and you drop a "Well I liked my mom she helped instill feminist values in me and I think it's the white male patriarchy that causes more issues," they will shift into soy nonsense and emasculation. So you've gotten them to stop plotting how to kill moms and now they're talking about where to buy testosterone supplements.

I forgot where I was going with this....probably something about how 4chan is a waste of time, which some how r*dditors still manage to be worse. Oh and you have to expose yourself to vile brainworms and slurs.

I'd say we shouldn't be afraid of discussing political topics in .world, but a few outliers being too disruptive could result in defederation. So the "patiently explain ourselves" part seems like the really important thing to me here. Also, if at some point there actually is much more political debate in their communities, I'd suggest engaging with mods in good faith and to a reasonable extent with the intention of keeping the space civil.

I agree with all points. I would say that lemmygrad especially should probably not use grad accounts for that reason. Ideally, one would make a .world account or maybe an .ee account so there's less concern about backlash

    1. I think we should focus our energies on lemm.ee, lemmy.ml, and various smaller instances like lemmy.zip instead.

    2. I don't trust the admin of lemmy.world at all and I would recommend people who have a lemmy.world account to exercise precaution.

I'm personally on an .ml account and directly accused a .world admin of doing apologia for Nazi collaborators and I'm not banned as far as I can tell. I think it depends on pissing of specific mods or something.

I would encourage people to pick and choose their battles, though.

Agitating online isn't worth the effort unless you enjoy it. Tends to make you mad at libs without much accomplished, in my experience.

I saw an interview with a former FB employee who said they found when they broke down echo chambers by increasing visibility of conservative and progressive content to the opposite, they found both sides would dig their heels in.

This could just be due to the state of MAGA and blueMAGA discourse, rather than online agitation being unproductive.
