Kind of, like some people definitely buy it, but you get free gold points just for receiving gold so a lot of the awards you see handed out are mostly from that rather than being paid for.
back in the day there were a lot of cryptocurrency tip bots where you could give users a fraction of a bitcoin/dogecoine/coinye/etc which I guess operated on the concept but it mostly felt like people trying to promote whatever obscure coin they were trying to hype up at the time. I got an obscure one once for making a dumb pun in one of the programmer subreddits, I think it worked out to be worth like 0.0003 USD so I never bothered trying to claim it :agony:

yeah, you give a website money for a post they didn't make, then give the jpeg you bought to the poster so they get time-limited benefits no-one uses
