the White Elephant building is cool as hell. because chongqing has no level surfaces, the ground floor on one side of the building is like seven stories up from the ground floor on the river side. you climb up and down school building-style stairwells that twirl around each other like a very low-poly double helix. each floor has apartments converted to coffee shops and majiang dens (in CQ and sichuan they play with giant majiang tiles the size of cigarette packs for some reason. pretty cool).

it's got a rustic 80s concrete-and-tile charm like many old buildings in china, just bigger and weirder. like a less dystopian version of mirador mansion/chongqing mansions in hong kong.

As a LED enjoyer and transit enthusiast, Chongqing is a definite bucket list for me (if i ever actually get to travel to east asia)

Been to a couple cities a little like this in the west. Not this extreme though.

I like how he passingly mentions the train going through the building as if it's something not at all remarkable.

I literally want to live in a hive city, if well-designed for air and light it could be amazing

An acquaintance I know in Texas was absolutely dumbfounded when I told him I walk to the grocery store. Lmao.

You loony leftoid, efficient city planning is not having enough homes for everyone and being forced to drive 20 minutes to get food.

Chongqing is a marvel of civil engineering and I will hear no ill of building a city on a vertical slope

Meanwhile, JC Denton literally beating Bill Gates Bob Page to death with a shock club while fending off murder parrots and spiderbots to wrest the Universal Printer away from the hands of billionaires.

I dearly love Deus Ex. It was such a perfect blending of conspiracy theory nonsense with actual, serious problems, done in a way where thinking about the conspiracies lead me to a better understanding of how politics and power work.

I think that's part of why I bounced off the re-boots. Without the absurd layers of weird conspiracy shit and esoteric philosphy the substance of the game that so fascinated me wasn't there.

See I never got that far but I thought the plot was that working class people were being forced to get cybernetics to gain employment, and then the capitalists were using control over the anti-rejection drug to discipline labor. And then the protagonist reprised JC's role as savior, or I guess being Adam the first man, by having some goofy biological trait that allowed him to accept cybernetics without needing the anti-rejection drug and somehow giving this ability to the people to free them.

it's so unfair that I live in a world where cities aren't walkable in three dimensions.

literally just give me glued-on bridges and scaffolds and stairs anywhere like the 45th floor and a slide that goes to a rooftop park next to my apartment that is parasitically attached halfway up a cluster of slowly merging skyscrapers with like secret little hidey places everywhere and extremely sketchy walkways that make a deeply croaking metallic sounds

18 stories isn't even that tall for a city. American cities have plenty of apartments twice that height.

Does that building normally look like that, or is it another case of the BBC dystopia camera filter?
