Clarification:
I totally agree with these people, it's just WHY ARE WE STILL DISCUSSING THIS? LETS GET ON WITH THE BEHEADING PLEASE!
Don’t make fun lol. Let people realise liberalism is dumb on their own terms and time. If people aren’t made fun of for not being instantly radical or still having lingering liberalism they’re more likely to be put off from the left, and less likely to discover more and share with peers.
Tumblr can be pretty based, I wish I used tumblr instead of reddit as a young teen, probably would have realised I was trans earlier :/
Back in that era it was quite a different place from what it is now, though. It wouldn’t evolve into its modern form until around 2017.
Yes I know, it's just this reminds me of the libs and crypto nazis saying "wow wow wait, before allowing people to not die of preventable diseases, lets be sure the philosophical ground for medicare4all/whatever is totally unflawed"
"We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words." Ursula K LeGuin
That's actually a pretty good argument, I'm gonna use it when reactionaries say that shit
As I said before, I'm not against the argument nor these people, it just reminds me of the libs and crypto nazis saying “wow wow wait, before allowing people to not die of preventable diseases, lets be sure the philosophical ground for medicare4all/whatever is totally unflawed”.
Like for fuck sake,
Oh yeah i get what you're saying, I just hadn't thought about that specific comparison yet and it's really fitting.
weird, I didn't see any m4a style stuff in that convo, just consideration of our current moment. I guess I would have to have libs living in my head to get this.
EDIT: NM, I see the public policy thing. whatever dude.
EDIT 2: I keep reading this to see the humor. To me this post reads like, "Look at these dumb libs! aren't they stupid for thinking about their political landscape in new ways!"
I'm not shitting on them, I totally agree with what they say; it's just sometimes is weird to read people saying "AHA! Capitalism is evil because of this obscure philosophical thing" and I'm just like "Yeah, OK, that's fine, I realized the system is evil when looking at people suffering for artificial scarcities/wars/etc, but OK".
You know, reading a philosophical work from an old era they talk a lot about complex things all to end up saying "and that's why slavery is bad/women should be considered real people/etc". It's weird to me.
Like why are we still discussing this?
the philosophy isn't what turns you into an anti-capitalist - that's as you said, experiencing the direct harms and coming to understand their causes. but the philosophy is useful in understanding why these harms occur, how to combat them in the present moment, and how to push back against apologists who continue uncritically making these points. it's just people working out theory.
