The thing that gets me is that this isn’t just a failure for COVID; it’s a failure to get systems in place for what comes after COVID too.

COVID was a trial run for the next pandemic.

Young working age Americans. The Spanish Flu mostly killed people in their 20s. Cytokine Storms are a bitch.

the bad avian flus have like a 25% death rate. If half of americans catch it that's 40 million dead. Of course that's not including the millions of additional deaths caused by the actual collapse of civilization

"These cities of Dublin and Drogheda were almost destroyed and wasted of inhabitants and men so that in Dublin alone, from the beginning of August right up to Christmas, fourteen thousand men died ... The pestilence gathered strength in Kilkenny during Lent, for between Christmas day and 6 March, eight Friars Preachers died. There was scarcely a house in which only one died but commonly man and wife with their children and family going one way, namely, crossing to death." - the Black Death in Ireland, 1348

hmm I think more. a lot more places will be closed for black friday, of course, than previous years but I still think the average american dumbass will be out and about maskless in their home-town bars and malls the week of thanksgiving.

Man fuck America. People are chilling in Wuhan, living about as normal a life as you can right now and we're living out a poorly written dystopian novel in real time. Fuck this failed state my goddddddddd

seeing them have a pool party was fucking surreal. I can only laugh at any America-stans that live in China trying to argue American-type governance is still good. Lol. I also think any reactionaries in Taiwan and Hong Kong should be sweating bullets, given how the U.S is collapsing.

What's the actual risk to like normal office workers? Assuming people are abiding by 6ft rule and wearing masks when appropriate (all the time?). Or like going to the store and wearing a mask? I'm not going to restaurants or bars or gatherings, but only wearing a regular mask when going to the store etc.

Basically, should we be stocking up and avoid going outside for winter?

It's basically impossible to make a properly informed decision without active public health measures like contact tracing and testing everybody including those asymptomatic.

Basically, if you think you are healthy, follow precautionary guidelines, and reduce your time outside or infrequent interaction with people, you are in the low-risk side.

It's so shitty that it's up to individuals to think about these things. I'd like to know too because I'm in the same situation and only going out to take walks and go to the grocery store.

And here I thought back in the Summer we'd see 90-100K (confirmed) cases/day by New Years. Seems more like we'll be flying over 100K soon, especially with no lockdown plans in sight as well as the handful of holidays coming up. Also noticed Texas alone had 7K+ cases, a little over 1,000 of which in El Paso where the hospitals are already at capacity as it is (edit - El Paso is actually going into shutdown mode again)

Oh that, and one of the old fucks on my dad's side of the family (who completely endorses the idea COVID is overblown/masks don't work/vaccine = bill gates chipping) just tested positive. Hoping my grandparents don't follow suit because they're in a populated area of Wisconsin and yet still go out to eat on occasion.

Not at all surprised. I mean even taking the neighboring state up here, the Wisconsin GOP is still trying to bring an end to the mask mandate/emergency order as they continue to reach record high numbers and I believe even one of the people trying to get rid of said rules recently tested positive himself.

will we hit 100 in a day at some point? the answer is it's highly likely

the actual number of new cases per day is probably 3 times the official numbers so we're already well into 6 digits

how do people think a sole mask mandate will fix this?

biden "shoot them in the leg" will make it required by law to wear a mask but it won't specify that it has to actually be on your face covering your face and nose
