I don't know if it will happen this generation, but that business model will get phased out in favor of a subscription service. Not that that will be better.
That's only worse for games you want to play later. I can't tell you how many games I've paid $50-$60 for, played for like a month, then never touched again. Still, I don't like the idea of essentially renting these games.
If I ever seriously get back into videogames (as in new titles and not replaying old shit all the time) I'm going to focus on indies just for the more reasonable price range, with the added bonus of some of them being made by companies that don't turbo-fuck the workers that actually make the games I love.
