Buying consoles on launch has always seemed like a terrible idea. No games yet and you're buying the worst version of the console before they fix any problems with it.

That said, there are cases like the PS3 where the original version had full PS2 backwards compatibility that was later removed, so there can sometimes be a good argument for getting a console early.

There's also cases like the Switch where it does have a pretty great launch game (Breath of the Wild), the price never drops significantly and the big issue with the console at launch (joycon drift) never gets fixed anyways. It's the only console I've gotten at launch since like the Wii that I didn't regret.

These things do have shortages for the first year or two of launch. It's not insane to be trying to get one now if you remember what it was like for the Wii.

I don't know if it will happen this generation, but that business model will get phased out in favor of a subscription service. Not that that will be better.

That would be much worse because you'll have no way of accessing older games once they get taken off the service.

That's only worse for games you want to play later. I can't tell you how many games I've paid $50-$60 for, played for like a month, then never touched again. Still, I don't like the idea of essentially renting these games.

If I ever seriously get back into videogames (as in new titles and not replaying old shit all the time) I'm going to focus on indies just for the more reasonable price range, with the added bonus of some of them being made by companies that don't turbo-fuck the workers that actually make the games I love.

No 1440p or 120hz support! But it has 8k? Nobody even has an 8k display. 120hz and 1440p need to happen.

Honestly, AAA games arent really worth their price tag to me anyway and I'd rather buy 15 dollar indie games on steam or itch that are more unique and replayable. My favorite games I've played recently are 10S, Disco Elysium and Ultrakill, so why the fuck would I spend nearly 1000 dollars on a brand new console with overpriced launch games that are barely any better than their PS4 versions.

yeah honestly big AAA games end up trying to get a great story, but have to appeal to a mass market so it's really watered down, and trying to get great gameplay, but it has to appeal to a mass market so it's really watered down. so the games just feel hollow and shitty

give me weird niche experiences like Ultrakill or Ghostrunner rather than a game that spent more on its advertising than its development any day

Sometimes its fun to play at launch, but I usually just play them a little later if I get a legal copy

I guess because it's also basically a ps4 pro and a ps5? (Backwards compatibility with basically all ps4 games) So if you have a normal ps4 and a 4k TV, it can give a significant graphical and performance upgrade to your ps4 games library? I dunno I'm not going to buy one for a few years until it gets cheaper in my country, you're right it really is pointless to get one now. The above is the only reason I can think of.

I had a friend who did that and I regret not doing it myself. Of course it was a pain in the ass for them to get the specific kind that can be jailbroken but still...

Really? Damn, i remember snes games only used to be like $30, tho i guess if you adjust for inflation then it's about the same. I guess I mainly meant when the PS used to sale the "certified classic" or whatever it was called for a game that was a few years old and the dropped the price under $20. They don't do that with the switch from what I've noticed but then again maybe it's because it's only like 3 years old. Idk

Ok that changes things a bit yeah, "classics" and stuff like handheld games have always been around 30 or so.

Also, nintendo specifically is infamous for rarely dropping their prices, because they're fully aware that everything they make is a permanent exclusive.

AAA titles are actually cheaper now, if anything. Here's some Toys 'R' Us SNES and Genesis titles circa 1994; they were still $50-70 back in 1994 dollars.

not nintendo games lmao - historically they are the worst when it comes to sales. I always regret being a lazy fuck and just buying the digital version of Switch games off the EShop when I realize that I've paid $60.00 for Mario Kart 8 - which came out 6 years ago - when I probably could've snagged a used switch copy at Gamestop for $30

Edit: Actually lmao I completely forgot I bought Bravely Default on the fucking 3DS on Friday night and completely forgot I spent $45.40 on the purchase. Why is an 8 year old 3DS game still full price?? :gui-better: gamers rise up

Didn't nintendo console games always cost around 50-60? DS games were around 34 bucks iirc but even going back to NES, adjusted for inflation the games were 130ish dollars.

I'm glad botw dropped price recently but nintendo is holding the price high on other old games for no reason. You can buy Spiderman for ps4 for 20 bucks but switch launch titles only just dropped to 45 dollars.

I'm tryna get one of the new consoles. Probably a Series X. I've gotten all the use I can out of my JTAG 360. They say the new Halo is having issues and shit but as long as the multiplayer is good, I'm good. Plus it'd be sick to see how far the hardware side has come

They've got a decent second life with the Master Chief Collection. I don't play much anymore but when I do it's usually Halo 3. There's a good online population. Also seem to be fewer 12 year olds calling me the n word than in newer games.

I also find it really hard to play casually, like once a week. When I was in college and playing every day I got pretty good at it. Now that I only play here and there I just get owned lol.

PS5 lol I'm excited for the PS4 to finally drop down in price to where I can justify buying it for the two or three games I actually want to play (and some games that are just re-releses of ps3 games). Most games made after like, 2014 don't interest me too much. there's just so much bullshit and fuckery on a consumer level that I don't even want to bother much of the time.

Hell yeah same here, I've never had a console game system of any kind and the last time I had a PC for games was in 2012. The only games I've been able to play since have been KSP and NITW, and those are barely playable on my old-ass 2014 MacBook that I got through my last employer.
