On one side: He (And California leadership overall) is unwilling to actually do what needs to be done to combat this (Pay people to stay fuckin' home).

But on the other: The Recall Newsom crowd clearly just want to replace him with someone that just won't give a fuck at all, open everything up 100% and keep it opened up no matter how bad things get.

Haha, this sucks man.

And yet California is supposed to be some liberal utopia blue state. Newsom and Cuomo are two Dem governors that the media is obsessed with and wanted to give a medal to them for how they handled the COVID pandemic despite how bad it has been in California and NY.

It's not talked about enough how Newsom conviently decided to just totally reopen the state as the BLM protests were becoming massive daily and gaining momentum day by day.

And it won't be talked about enough. Kinda like how it's never mentioned that Cuomo kept nursing homes open in the midst of the first COVID outbreaks and then pushed to re-open public transportation after it had been shut down in NYC.

The pandemic really was eye opening just how rampant the liberal media is in our country. 70% of all our mainstream media has a liberal bias. Newsom and Cuomo both should be getting slammed repeatedly on media for blatant carelessness and doing nothing. Instead, they are propped up as heroes.

Not authoritarianism: having a global archipelago of over a thousand military installations

Authoritarianism: spending some of the trillion dollar budget on supporting people through a necessary quarantine

The problem is there is no money to deal with the pandemic correctly. There is no federal government support.

(Pay people to stay fuckin’ home).

States can't deficit spend the way a federal government can. California does not have it's own Federal Reserver printing money and all that

    • BillyMays [he/him]

Yes they can. These states are big enough and hold enough power if wielded properly to do whatever they please during a pandemic.

It's a shame Prop 15 failed, it would have evaluated property taxes based on current market value and would have given a ton of revenue to local governments

Yeah growing up I could never defend the democrats because I think deep down I knew they sucked and the only argument I could think of was they weren't republicans. This two party system is a farce since at the end of the day they both represent capitalism.

Thats any state with a vocal recall movement. Nobody wants to pull them over doing a shit job, rather they want them pulled over not doing a shit enough job.

I wouldn't say that's true. Alaska had been trying to recall its governor for his taking a hatchet to the state budget and essential services. It made it to the second round of signature gathering before the rug got pulled out from under it by the pandemic

Edit: just saw your other post clarifying your original statement. Oh well, I was late to the party

California is one of the greatest examples because you can point to it and basically tell people that this is exactly what the country would have looked like under Biden: SHIT

California has almost no "Trump" influence in terms of the coronavirus. California "heard the science" and "shut down" immediately and with force. It's just that, libs that they are, "shut down" basically meant "any business that wants to stay open can if they think they're special." And shocker, they all stayed open! (exaggerating)

So the same thing happened that happened in every other state - people went to work and people got sick. Not because of the orange man, or GOP Governor So-and-So, but because of Capitalism. And liberals love capitalism probably more than conservatives.

California could have shut everything down, taxed the rich and mobilized the people, and take over the necessary infrastructure to have a much better outlook from this virus. They didn't and we all know why. But for liberals, let California be a shining example of what the USA would have looked like under a democratic president. Shit.

Well, to be maybe too fair to California, there's only so much a fuckin state can do because the money all comes from the feds. Is any state paying people not to work? I feel like that's beyond most state budgets.

No states are doing that, but CA could. It's certainly beyond most states' budgets but not CA. It's not much of a joke to call it the world's fifth largest economy. There are some things to be fair to California about but this isn't one of them imo - this is literally a case study on capitalism and how Blue v Red means jack shit in the face of stuff like this

Pay people to stay fuckin’ home

Because of our wonderful, perfect federal system, this is effectively impossible for any state to implement, even one as large and wealthy as California. They don't have the power to print money and their ability to take on debt is much more limited than the Federal government. Even if Newsom wanted to pay people to stay home, California would get bankrupted in a month or two - and yes maybe the Federal government can't go bankrupt but a state sure can.

The only adequate response to a pandemic like this is a strong national response. Our system is entirely incapable of this, which is a big reason why COVID is ravaging the US and will continue to do so. And unless we radically change how our government is structured, the next pandemic will be no different.

Nah. States could do it if they fucking tried. Leaning on the Fed's shit response (which was obvious from day. fucking. one.) as the reason they can't do anything is neoliberal ghoul shit. They knew the feds would leave them to dry but instead of I don't know, acting like its an emergency and trying it's all what they can ""afford"" while still pushing fucking austerity budgets.

State needs to institute another eviction/rent moratorium (I don't know which aspect of gov has the power in California to do that) since they can't really give people extra money without federal government assistance.
