I love how efforts at casting diversity still end up with mostly white women. One of the white women is fat (not meant perjoratively), one of them is probably gonna be gay, and the other will be rich. Then you check some more diversity with two straight women of color. Everyone gets one diversity point, except the most important one, who will have zero diversity points, so the audience can relate.

edit: I do not actually love it

apparently they got a white girl to play the asian character, so in some ways it's even less diverse than the original lmao

Well yeah because in the cartoon there are three fairies (?) of color - Black, Latino, and Asian. But I guess there's one fewer in that picture than the other so maybe we'll get a Latino character introduced five episodes in as an even less important magical girl.

This is not real. This is not real. This is not real. This is not real.

JFC that was a show for kids. It was bright and colorful and for kids. You're killing the entire aesthetic. This is like making a gritty My Little Pony, only with actual horses. I hate this. Why are you doing this? Ugh. This show is, like, a big part of my childhood. It wasn't a show boys were supposed to watch, so I had to watched it in secret. That kind of idea of what it meant to be a boy ran deep in me. Like, I would join in when my other friends would make fun of a "girly" friend of ours. I wouldn't play certain sports because they were girls' sports. Or when a girl I was a friends with (she was literally the only one I knew who read any books so we'd bonded over that) invited me to her birthday and I turned her down because I was embarrassed/ashamed that my dad had gotten to know about it. I was so fucking afraid of being thought of as girly or sensitive or emotional. Even today I have trouble letting myself feel things and not just repressing anything I think of as a weakness. Anyways, dunno why this turned into a rant about childhood toxic masculinity but seeing Winx Club just brought back all those memories and emotions.

This sucks. I hate Netflix. I hate Prime Video. I hate Disney Plus. Just let people make shit they care about and stop trying to abuse our nostalgia. You cut shows like Tuca and Bertie and then give us this shit. Fuck off.

...and they don't talk. The entire movie has to be interpreted from their neighing and body language. We'll get George Lucas to direct.

Sometimes, very rarely, they get it right when it comes to remakes though. The new She-Ra was absolutely awesome.

The thing with the new She-Ra is that you can put it next to the old She-Ra and say "these are the same series, just with different art direction because they were made 35 years apart". Same with new/old My Little Pony, same with the recent Samurai Jack and Rocko's Modern Life special. This feels like a completely unrelated script that they had sitting around that they shoved the Winx Club brand into because they didn't think it would be possible to sell otherwise.

Right; never saw the original She Ra to be honest. I watch very little animated content in general (basically Frisky Dingo / Archer / ATHF / Bojack and that's it) but my SO really insisted I watch the new one and boy was she right. Watched it entirely twice.

Netflix is appropriating italian culture, also it just looks bad and overly serious for what was a kids show

Is nostalgia the only thing that sells anymore for the entertainment industry?
