Point: imposing value judgements (especially if enforced), weird shit like it being ok to show hundreds getting killed if there's no blood or cursing

Counterpoint: some kids are pussies (like me) and will be traumatized by gore and violence and shit

Countercounterpoint: kids need to see that violence to prepare them for revolution or something

Maybe something more akin to a list of trigger warnings, or the IMDB parents guide that just described all the acts of violence/sex and instances of cursing would be more helpful and value-neutral

Go!

I think we have to remember that ratings systems were entirely made by cultural panic in the 80s over issues we were actually pretty much causing ourselves

On the other hand, I think content warnings should be added as courtesy, not everyone wants or can deal with difficult subjects but we shouldn't bar meaningful discussion in places meant for difficult discussion. I think it's in the capabilities for some kids and young adults to begin being introduced to difficult and challenging questions but ultimately up to the guardian

I've been thinking about how weird Disney+ is. It acknowledges that many of the movies are racist and adds a (very lazy) warning before (some of) the movies. Yet this doesn't affect the rating they show. How can racism and xenophobia be "child-friendly"?

This is why doesthedogdie.com is the superior movie site

    Ratings are garbage.

Would rather have some knowledge beforehand regarding things like nudity, graphic sex, graphic violence, graphic gore. Something giving a warning about language, maybe (but that's more difficult to describe) and sensitive topics. Hopefully the "language" and "sensitive topics" would be telegraphed by the description of the media and its genre, (I feel with spoilers causing rage, descriptions of media have gotten more and more nonsensical.)

I've been watching foreign horror movies in public places and suddenly there were two naked women making out. Wasn't expecting it. Kinda awkward.

All ratings should be inversed, so that e.g. only kids can watch the formerly adult only movies.

I agree. These ratings don't do shit in the way of stopping minors anyway (a torrent site doesn't card you, lol), also the national ratings system in Poland is weirdly based upon some kind of a weird sorta-Catholic idea of morality.

To side step this a bit isn't the ESRB a thing where the gaming industry self policing in an effort to keep regulation by the government out of videogames. Like fuck the government but I don't like the idea of capitalist policing themselves.

It might do to have like a rating system made by video game players vs one that is made by capitalists. I say we are better judges of character compared to people who might have never played a game.

Violence and sexual content should both be heavily restricted for children. Let parents give their kids what they want, but heavily fine and/or jail people who sell/rent inappropriate material to minors.

Citizens rate and complain imo. Rate everything to the most strict standards. Parents can chose if their kids get access or don't.
