I'm sorry, are we banning people for having stupid opinions about can openers now? Is this where we are? I'm genuinely getting a bit annoyed with how ban happy the mods have gotten.

Yeah he was calling people "bitch" and acting like emotional abuse is a thing that doesn't exist because nobody goes to jail for it. I get that they said they were abused themselves, and that is awful but yeah. Downplaying other forms of abuse is not how you make things better.

There is a growing movement to criminalise coercive control in domestic violence matters which includes emotional abuse

I'm sure you'll be surprised to know that there's a real strong risk it'll just make it harder for victims of DV to get access and result in greater policing of nonwhite people

If he was being abusive towards other users that's a different matter.

It's also worth noting that banned users can just make another account and keep right on posting. Plenty presumably do, too; you just occasionally get folks like this who make a "banned_user2" account and then throw a tantrum about getting put in posting time out.

People shouldn't get attached to their accounts anyway. I'm strongly considering deleting this account at 10,000 comments and making a Soylent Green celebration post about it.

Now calling people bitch is abuse. The slippery slope continues.

I guess Chen is abusive for calling Marsha Blackburn a lifetime bitch? Is saying bitch against the rules?

          Let’s all go cancel Chen!!!

Just make a rule against saying the word bitch, or don’t ban people for it.

But no, you’d rather it be a murky gray area so you can ban those who disagree with the witch hunts and circlejerks

I was receiving much more “abuse” (online name calling is not abuse) than I was giving, I only got salty towards the end when people downplayed my abusive experiences.

Yet I’m the only one with a ban... hmmmm....

I'm sorry if you felt like people were hurling abuse at you, and that people were downplaying any abuse you experienced. That's obviously not very fun. If you feel like people were being abusive to you, you should report it. Mods around here typically want a very positive space for people.

However, I haven't read the thread and honestly don't plan to so I can't validate (nor disprove) what you're saying. Obviously, you've got a new username and can stay unbanned as long as rules aren't broken.

To be clear, by "downplaying my abusive experiences" they mean people telling them that having experienced abuse doesn't make them an expert on what is and isn't abuse, as far as I can tell. I didn't see one person actually downplay the abuse they experienced.

Again, please learn what the word abuse means and stop flinging it around so carelessly. Being mocked online is not violence, it is not abuse.

There was a lot of rape jokes, a lot of antisemitism which was definitely not mocking bigots, some homophobia, and that's not even getting into the n-word.

I dont know anything about this guy other than that 김종칠 or 김정칠 sounds like a very authentic Korean old guy name (Especially the 칠 part - often it meant he's like the seventh son of the family which isnt exactly common these days)

One of the leaders of 1961 South Korean right-wing military coup that eventually became a founding KCIA chief and had a lengthy political career is named 김종필(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Jong-pil) so that guy also comes to mind.
