I have two cats and they're fucking awesome. Unlike dogs they never have the potential to snitch on me.

You're likely not gonna get a serious drop in car prices unless things get very, very bad:

      1. Most of the cars in OP's potential moral hazard aren't going to be on the market anyway - people will be living in them when they recognize the Chevy Cruze they've been deferring maintenance on them won't pay their rent for another month.

      2. There could be another supply constrictng program in the vein of Cash For Clunkers.

      3. There's a lot of cars out there financed on almost predatory terms. The banks will repossess them and try to auction them to dealers - which is easy to do unlike a house. This dampens downward pressure on price because used car dealers still need to make money.

I can help you get a good used car if you want. There are a lot of very affordable used cars on the market right now. I don't think there will be more once evictions start.

If you have any advice for me that would be great. I was hoping to get a hybrid if possible.

If you want a Hybrid get a Prius. They're good cars. You can get one in the US for around 4k. If you go to look at one in person make sure they haven't run the car yet and you are starting a cold engine. Stay away from Ford Hybrids.

Whoa whoa whoa! My mom owned a Prius for years so I get that they're great cars, but buying a used one for $4k? I was looking earlier today and I couldn't even find one for $14k that was made less than 5 years ago. The best "deal" I found was a 2018 Prius for $18.5k that ended up having an additional $2k dealer charge hidden in it, making it closer to $20.5k. Oh, and my current car with transmission issues is a Ford, so I entirely understand how shit their cars are. Would you happen to know if Kia makes good hybrids? I think they're closer to my price range.

I'm looking at the cheapest of the cheap Prius. If you want a car that was made in the last 5 years it won't be that cheap.

The jury is still out on Kias for me. I've heard good and bad. The people I know who own them really like them.

The Prius "C" is a sub-subcompact version that is usually dirt cheap on the used market:

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Prius_C

Toyota also made hybrid versions of some of their normal lines (e.g., Camry, Corolla, and even the freaking Highlander); those aren't bad, but the fuel economy is nowhere near the Prius (especially the Highlander), and they hold value fairly well compared to their gas-only counterparts. What's comical is when you run across the Lexus versions of some of those. Woe to anyone who ever has to replace a stereo in an RX400H.

Motorbikes are cheaper than cars and less shit for the environment, higher risk of becoming road jam though

I live near a VERY dangerous highway and I need a vehicle big enough to carry a decent amount of groceries in, so a motorbike probably wouldn't be for me. :(

Yeah I drive an hour to and from work on a extremely fucky highway with horrible drivers. Ain't no way I would get a motorbike.

Don't blame you, my old commute was about the same without the highway, i would say i nearly became one with the universe about once every couple of weeks

I used panniers and a rucksack to get my shopping home, you can fit a surprising amount of stuff in there if you pack it well
But yeah, you're probably better off with a car

Get a motorbike. Most 125CC bikes value doesn't even go down even after 5 years and if you get some old Honda Cg it'll never break down or cost you money.

If I have to settle for a gas only car then a Honda will be the first on my list. I've heard the legends of 15-20 year old Honda cars.

I'm into cars have had 30+. Know how to work on them and make money from them. But for most a car is just another trap into poverty. When I lived in a large city I rode my bike and took transist everywhere. In Germany I noticed that all the smaller towns near a mid sized city had public rail that ran a very often schedule.

As a guy that enjoys machines, working on them, and driving I would love if we invested in ways to get all you guys off the road that hate it. And I'm sure it would lift people out of poverty also as cars cost a lot to maintain esp if you get the wrong one.

It's 100% a poverty trap as it's an asset that will almost always decrease in value over time.

I wish my state would focus more on public transport in suburban and rural areas.

I went into used car window shopping thinking they would be discounted due to lack of customers but after browsing for a few weeks I think you're absolutely right about them jacking up prices to compensate. I might have to do the unthinkable and buy new, especially if there are surplus 2020 cars when the 2021's come out. Although a new hybrid wouldn't be in my budget, so I'd have to switch to gas.

I'm in the same situation. Living in a suburb so I needed a car. I was able to buy one from a family member so see if a friend or something is selling first I guess
