[shaking, trembling] BUT THE DEFICIT, WHICH I SUDDENLY CARE ABOUT FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2016
The democrats are in a position where they could do literally anything they wanted, and they're still not even sending out $2000. I'm feeling kinda dark, especially after just having pointless arguments with my folks where they were defending these monsters. Somehow I'm the idiot and accommodating Republicans while being civil is more important than saving lives.
Edit:
At this point I'm mostly pissed that the entire political establishment has combined forces to ruin my relationship with my parents that I haven't seen in a year. I need to learn to keep my mouth shut and just deny the reality we can all see in front of us.
I love the "have your cake and eat it too" argument of "the leftists are giving the Republicans so much slack! They're basically the same! They're terrible fascists!" Followed by "and that's why we need to compromise with the opposition even though we have complete control of all the levers of power".
It's one of those contradictions that gives me vertigo.
Last I heard it wasn't even $10k, it's $10k towards private loans, which only account for 8% of student debt in the US, and it has to be passed by Congress (i.e. it won't be)
they don't have a super majority, i.e. the ability to override filibusters and/or vetoes
Apparently there is some arcane rule (wow a shocker, I know) that lets you abolish the filibuster with a simple majority
if you do it in the first week of a new congress, so that’s why people are saying things like “technically the dems could do x” or “we need to win the Georgia races (so that we have a majority)” of course there’s no way in hell that they’ll actually end the filibuster, so the dems will be able to say “we really wanted to help poor people but the republicans were so mean to us 🥺” for another two yearsHmm I thought so but now I can’t find a source. I’ll edit the post
the procedural meme that's been floating around is budget reconciliation, which can bypass the filibuster for some budget legislation, subject to a bunch of arbitrary restrictions that nerds could probably tell you about.
