North England separates and becomes bros with independent Scotland, South England seperates because they figure why not. Leaving London to finally truly be all of the United Kingdom (so called because the smaller inner City of London within the city of London, long story, is still in a union under the crown).

"Should northern ireland be part of the UK?"

Lib: "Well I'm very glad you brought up this question because it gets at the very heart of the deep issues plaguing our society and I think we all just need to come together and unify around our shared values and unite to build a shared project of progress and prosperity for all. Our vision is to include everyone in our future by building partnerships across the divide and strengtheing what makes our society great. There's so much more we can accomplish when we all put our hands together and participate in the process."

Fifth of society: "omg so smart that's exactly what we need"

This is your brain on idealism indeed. Knowing hellworld though, it's probably extremely popular among the youth?

It's a tool. Nationalism for countries that have been colonized is generally good, and historically means getting rid of foreign rule. Nationalism for countries that do the colonizing is generally bad, and historically means them doing even more colonizing abroad and oppression of minorities at home.

Nationalism means a bunch of different things. Nationalism often means "we want to be a nation". For instance the PKK, PYD etc are Kurdish nationalists, Palestinian nationalists are resisting colonization by Israel and usually want a one state solution under a nation called Palestine, etc. In the context of Ireland, what the nationalists want is reunification after they were taken over by the English. So that's a specific kind of nationalism that is not "bad". There is also Irish nationalism that is of the "bad" kind you have in mind but that's another issue.

Nationalism was also an important component of many liberal democratic revolutions as well as some emancipatory movements during the 19th century which are seen as positive by marxists because they overtook the old feudal order, monarchism, or colonialism.
