I think it is 14 in Spain as well. The idea behind having an age of consent that low is probably that teenagers having sex with each other shouldn't be the police's business.

        [tw: Sexual violence]

It's pretty fucked up that it's that low in China given that such Chinese law is partially responsible for an oil executive getting away with sexually abusing, for years, a teenaged girl under his care. The only silver-lining of that horrific event being that it has created public pressure for China to raise its age of consent.

Many countries are able to write common-sense laws that allow for teenagers to have sex, while still making it illegal for adults to take advantage of them. There's no reason that China can't do the same

I'm not saying that the Chinese law is the best way of doing this, only suggesting what the reasoning behind it could be.

Some countries have it so that the age of consent is lower if the other party is also below a certain age. So for example the general age of consent could be 16, but if the other party is below 16, then the age of consent becomes 14.

They guy who is the Danish minister for foreign affairs had sexual relations with a 15 year old girl from his party's youth organisation when he was 34 under what accounts suggests to be less than consensual circumstances. It was technically legal as the age of consent here is 15 and since the party stopped the girl and her family from involving the police.

He stepped back from his most high-profiled rapporteurships for a few months and then went back to be elected several times and be appointed to one of the most influential ministries.

          Europeans are also very Catholic.

I think those two things might be related.

Hey, Chinese comrade here, just wanted to let you guys who are surprised about "how low" the age of consent is that it isn't all that unusual or strange for that matter. The age of consent in China for 14 years old is only for, as Wikipedia puts it:

Younger partner is deemed able to consent to having sex with an older one as long as the latter is not in a position of trust or authority, or is recognised to be abusing the inexperience of the younger one.

It is the same way in other countries:

Age of consent is 15 in Poland 14 in Austria 15 in Denmark 14 in Italy 14 in Chile 14 in Portugal 15 in Czechia 14 in Hungary 15 in Cuba 15 in Croatia 14 in Bulgaria

So just do research and think before making fun of someone's country!

In one Australian state, a 10 year old can have sex with a 12 year old under their 'close in age' defence provisions.

It's a bit of a moot point because they also raised the age of criminal responsibility to 14 years old, which I think is the appropriate way of dealing with teenagers having (consensual insofar as kids are actually capable of consent) sex with each other.
