My immediate thought after they changed the amount and every news outlet all agreed he meant 1400 when he said 2000, was that the midterms are guaranteed to be a blowout against them.
Tbh I don’t think it matters, the fact so much voter suppression legislation is going through is damning them in the midterms and 2024 anyway.
Forget about her little stunt yesterday, Sinema was doomed to losing her reelection the moment she refused to support abolishing the filibuster and passing the John Lewis voting rights act. My father says that the the understanding was that $2,000 total would be given out.
When I pointed out that they said $2,000 checks would go out, I was told that things can change and compromises may be made.
Of course, if I say that the Democrats control Congress and the Presidency, he says that some Democrats need to be compromised with.
Finally, when I point out the party could do more to get the holdouts on their side (such as threatening to primary them), my father says that it would not be the right thing to do.
At one point, he said that I was sounding like "that crazy woman from New York" (AOC). He didn't have much of a response when I pointed out that, if she got her way, we would have more benefitted.
Don't allow them to change the argument. Once you get to "things can change" you nail it down. "So they did change it. And if we have to do these kind of mental gymnastics to justify it, it means they didn't want to address it."

If you say so, but from the last 4 years of fact-checking Trump, I don't think that's even a meaningful observation to make, even if you could get to the point where you clear the semantic quagmire of whether or not they were intentionally misleading or simplifying for the sake of brevity (does someone who gets a $2000 direct deposit get to say they lied about being sent a $2000 check?). Which you can't.
Instead, point out the unchallengable observation that the people deciding on these things are robots so fare removed from the lives of ordinary people that the can't possibly advocate for them, and instead busy themselves with arcane means tested and conditional games.
This is something that has already been realized by the average person and led them to apathy rather than radicalization.. "where's your $2000 check?" speaks directly to someone's material interests and might at least make them less apathetic.
I don't really buy that; all the people I know that are living paycheck to paycheck are just happy to get any breathing room.

Nah, I think there's a distinction. Accusing them of "lying" gives the horde of "well actually" types the opportunity to jump in with Snopes articles and more detailed contemporary write-ups to go on and on about how they weren't lying.

What matters isn't the size of the check but the relative trustworthiness of the politicians. Promising $2000 and delivering $1400 (or less) will be easy to spin as betrayal.
The constant need to compromise away on your campaign platform is what dried up support for Democrats in 2010.
Hopefully, this time, leftists can leverage the disgust as efficiently as Republicans did.
